Anyone started ‘prepping’? Obviously that picture of the Austrian fella earlier was on the extreme end, but my £150 weekly shop today turned into £500 of stocking up on essentials. It’s not that I’ve been cleaning Asda out of Spam and noodles, but I reckon I could manage a month without leaving the house.

It’s all normal stuff so it’ll get used whatever happens but I felt that a) if I have to self-quarantine we’ll be fairly self sufficient, and b) if there’s a mad panic buying spree I’ll have already done it!

I realise it sounds a bit mental (and genuinely I’m not that concerned) but I don’t see any harm in having the cupboards fully stocked.
You tripled your grocery bill, just in case.
No not mental in the slightest .
I doubt I could fit £500 of groceries in my car.

Yeah, it’s just stuff like multiple boxes of porridge oats, pasta, rice, cans of tomatoes, tinned fruit, honey - all stuff that we eat every day anyway. And six CR123 batteries was £21 of that - sodding expensive. I did freeze a load of ribeye steak, six loaves of bread and 12 pints of milk, so let’s hope the power doesn’t go off! biggrin

In fairness I’m at a significantly higher risk than most with my job and my wife is undergoing immunotherapy, so I’m taking an interest in how things develop. Already got a work colleague in full-on hospital quarantine so it’s closer to home than I’d like.

A while back to be honest - got plenty of food if we get stuck in... nothing too exciting but definitely enough to see us through a good few weeks... maybe a month at a push. I bought extra baby formula and nappies just in case too.

Over and above that, I made sure I’ve got a couple of spare sets of a2p3 filters for my mask and I’ve got a full box of nitrite gloves too.

All stuff we will use (possible exception is the baby formula but any food bank will be happy with that).

Excessive, maybe - but worth it for not having to scrap with the masses at the big Sainsbury’s if/when cases pop up here.

There's an argument that it's sensible to be at the head of the queue in any panic, because if you leave it too late you'll be stuck without regardless of whether the panic itself is sensible or not. See the current supply situation with masks and hand sanitiser.

It wouldn't take much to have a sudden rush on the shops, so adding a bit extra ahead of time is a sensible move even if that might make the problem self fulfilling.

Full prepper is a bit much but a buffer doesn't hurt, especially with reminders of what could happen getting closer to home.
If it’s stuff that’ll last there’s no harm I guess as it’ll come off the next few months shop anyway.
Did peeps also prep for #brexit shops so empty of goods it's a disaster I tells thee. Nothing to eat, getting so weak ...

TX.

There’s something in that, if we’re all going to be exposed anyway. The Chinese ’Survivors’ stories point to early intervention being key so the NHS won’t be able to help with that if it’s overrun.
Containment has to be tried but, once this gets out, then yeah, just let it run its course, deal with it like you would 'flu etc and not damage the economy by too much quarantine.

I was a little flippant about this a few days ago, in ignorance of the facts.
My business partner has just (Sunday) flown back through Milan after skiing in the Dolomites (Sprint please!). His wife had a call to say they should self quarantine if any of them get symptoms!
I've done a lot of medical reading today and it seems possible that this has been around for a good while but has mutated rapidly (clever things viruses, their DNA is geared to fking things up)
I'm lucky, I live in the hills of Snowdonia and have 3 months of wood, 5 months of oil and a diesel genny that runs off fuel oil. We've just placed a huge order for home delivery for food that lasts and I've sorted scripts for my asthma meds.
I pity those in urban areas, flats, housing estates, cities if this gets to where it could.
What I already know is that business associates, even now, are changing their supply chain from China to Europe with higher prices to be passed on to their customers.
I've said it before. China is a farm factory where life is cheap. This could spell the end to their growth and I for one will be glad to see that.

Or.......pinky in mouth, fluffy white cat on knee, "I have a cunning plan."

Containment will never happen.

You honestly think that those people who won’t get paid if they ‘self quarantine’ will be doing so? I’ll get paid so will many others but a lot won’t.

Will they say ‘fk paying my landlord rent or a mortgage or anything else?’ Not everyone still gets paid if they don’t turn up for work.

No way these people will risk their livelihoods or homes to self quarantine if they have mild symptoms.

Twitter just now:

‘Air born transmission Confirmed.
3-5 days before symptoms show.
(Meaning it can be spread it, passed on before anyone aware they're infected.)’

Millions must have it then and it is very mild.

Or it’s very difficult to catch despite it being airborne.

Can’t be both.

First one is my bet. Second one doesn’t make sense as there are seemingly clusters where a lot have it.

No way 200 people caught it randomly in Italy. Those that have it are probably the ones who were tested. If they tested everyone there would be thousands more I’m sure.

11 now dead in Italy unfortunately. All over 75 though.

Edit - actually, I’ve sort of done a 180 on this because we’ve tested like 6000 and no one had it....

None of this makes sense!

Forgive my ignorance, but is it possible for a virus to have multiple strains whereby one is more deadly than the other? Would it be possible for the strain in Italy to be stronger and more deadly than the one that’s doing the rounds in Singapore?
