I was expecting him to go. Cummings was no fan and he never inspired much confidence comes across as bit of a drip plus he had that issue last year with the young female spad been marched out of Whitehall.

The recent leaks in the past week on a mansion tax and raid on private pensions was probably the final straw.

Good riddance so they say.

Tell me about Rishi Sunak
Don't think I've ever heard of him. Not a high profile character? Seems strange to offer the No. 2 job to someone so, er, un-visible?

You do seem rather worked up about this.

No doubt No 10 didn't want the Treasury emerging as a rival power base (as in the Blair Brown years). They all work for Boris whether it be Savvid or Rishi.

Dominic Cummings is having an absolute field day here! Didn't Boris appoint these people he is sacking in the first place?

Sunak has the financial background, but he is not a political heavyweight and, I am not sure he ever will be
He has an awfully rich and well connected father in law.....

He was born in Southampton, then went to Winchester School, Oxford University then lived and worked in London. He might have been parachuted into Hague's old seat, but that doesn't make him a Northerner.

Appointed when he didn't have a majority, so selected to keep various factions in the party happy.

Now he's got a thumping majority the various Awkward Squads have far less influence, so faction happiness isn't such a factor.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Javid as such, but good on him for resigning over this. No minister should have it dictated to them whom their own staff are.

When are we taking back control from the unelected special advisers again?
Advisors don't have "control", they advise. Ultimately ministers/PM make the decisions, both on which advisors to have, and which advise to take.

Anyone blaming Dom for anything should actually be blaming the PM.

I sort of get that feeling too; he's gone on a point of principle.

As I've said, I did think he was more convincing as Home Sec, but that ship's sailed.

A better question is who's driving the boat, Cummings or Johnson?

Heaven forbid we might have people appointed to the top jobs in the country because they're the best person for the job.

Once again, internal party politics is shown to be more important to the govt of the day than doing the best at the job they've been elected to do.

Yep

Boris wants to consolidate power to get his agenda through and didn't want a rival power base in the Treasury. It is also up to Boris what he does. He was the face of a Conservative GE campaign that just won a good majority. If the public don't like what he is up to they can replace him in four years

If Boris decides to be controlled by Cummings, it's still Boris' decision and Boris' responsibility.

Johnson is driving the boat, Cummings is navigating the course.
