Boris wants to consolidate power to get his agenda through and didn't want a rival power base in the Treasury. It is also up to Boris what he does. He was the face of a Conservative GE campaign that just won a good majority. If the public don't like what he is up to they can replace him in four years
No he wasn't, he spent the election running from the media or hiding in a fridge.

A better question is who's driving the boat, Cummings or Johnson?
Johnson is driving the boat, Cummings is navigating the course.
Not sure about that. I think it's more a case of Johnson standing on the bridge and Cummings is both plotting the direction and doing the steering. The British electorate thought they'd selected a leader, turns out they've got a puppet.

Defenestrating the shipping minister when trade is going to become a whole lot more important is an odd one, especially as they've not named a replacement.

Poor

He gave upteen media interviews, appeared in leadership debates and was in virtually all their advertising. In terms of commitments made the buck stops with him not with Javid. He has every right to put together a team that he feels will deliver and he will be judged on the results in 4 years time (not Javid if he had stayed in place)

Do you really think Bojo will take responsibility for anything when it all goes tits up? Or do you mean the buck stops with Dom?

Minister of State for Housing and Planning in a Tory govt must be the easiest job ever.

1) Get appointed to post
2) Do nothing
3) Leave post

Well that depends on how you view it. The alternative is he is surrounding himself with people he can trust who will do what he asks rather than trying to follow their own agenda. He has form for putting good people in positions of power and letting them get on with the job.
Two different ways of working, personally I know who I would rather work for and the results of doing so speak for themselves...

I agree entirely.

I think his campaign was shambolic and who knows what might have been if not for the weakest opposition and opposition leader in recent history but regardless of what I think it won him a whopping majority and he's free to do as he chooses with the mandate he has.

As you say he'll be judged by the results and doesn't have the wriggle room to blame a "remainer Parliament".

Best of luck to him for all our sakes.

Exactly

I have no opinion on which of the two would make a better chancellor. What I am saying is that Boris has a right to choose his own team and he will be judged on the results. In modern times there has usually been tension between No 10 and the Treasury. The only exception was Cameron/Osbourne because they formed a close working relationship and worked as a team.

Really?

Julian Smith was very effective, but got sacked despite his competence. Priti Patel stays in post despite being absolutely useless.

Indeed it does.

Some will consider he is surrounding himself with people who will not think for themselves and will do what they are told.

Bet I can guess which side of the fence Javid sits.

Growing up in the late 60s and 70s, the 4 great offices of state, PM, Chancellor, Foreign & Home secs, were always held by people of real gravitas. Now we have Boris the liar, Rish Who?, Priti Vacant and Dominic the idiot Raab.

This country has gone to the fking dogs.

How so?

Or is it Shambolic to build a team that will work with/for you rather than appoint people to appease those who work against you?

When one considers that Bojo himself appointed Sajid after becoming PM, then what does that say about the PM's ability of choosing the right person for the job in the first place?

An utterly shambolic tory party are making themselves look daft but anything Dom wants, Dom gets!
