While I always try to avoid driving through puddles when possible, these last few days have made it impossible.
My 04 Shogun runs on 265 X 75 X 16 AT tyres and I'm staggered by how much water is thrown over the windscreen, even at modest speeds. I don't recall this issue with anything else I've driven
Is this something peculiar to the Shogun,or is it true of all 4x4s?

My old Land Cruiser 80 series does it too. I tend to flick the wipers on just before hitting a puddle but it still gives passengers a fright.

Haven't noticed my new Hilux doing the same but will try it the next time I spot a decent puddle.

My RRS had no issues with puddles. Don't remember anything noticeable when driving through even a sizable body of water.

My GL manages to throw the entire puddle over the screen. It's amazing that no water goes anywhere else.

I fitted a set of Michelin SUV Cross Climate winter tyres to my Macan, they shift a lot water than its summer tyres. It goes all over the screen when going through puddles. I can see dry tyre tracks behind me on wet motorways.

Think it is pretty common with most 4x4’s. Suspect it is due to the increased ride height and maybe lesser overhang at the front compared to a car. A car will throw just as much water up, but it’ll get trapped more so in the arch and be deflected sideways. A 4x4 will send more straight up and forward which you then drive into while it is in the air.

The shogun was pretty bad for this, mine did exactly as the OP described.
I assumed it was lack of mud guards that caused it.
Ironically when I looked at the new / current shogun sport, one of the manufactures clips was it driving through water and the audio was how worked to stop it throwing water over the screen.

WJ Grand Cherokee Shed Edition..

Mine does the same..

Wipers on full panic mode, and carry on.

I'm pleased to hear it's not just my car that does this.
Would after market arch extensions or Paris Dakar style mudflaps go anyway to solving this, or would they just make me look like a complete tit ?

I have wheel arch extensions on the GL which stick out enough to cover the wheels but it still chucks the entire puddle on my screen.

There are no standard-fit mudflaps for mine, thanks to those wheel arches but I would like a set, even if I have to make-up the fittings myself. I do have quite wide wheels though - 295 tyres. Does anyone know where I might get wide-enough mudflaps to fit?

Agree with the above my current FFRR is not quite as bad.

Probably not. It is the water being displaced and thrown forwards that is the issue. Think when you slap your hand on water with you fingers pointing away from you, the water will go up and away from you too. Same happens when the tyre impacts the water. The larger gap between the road and front body work is what allows the water to get high enough to come over the bonnet and onto the screen as you drive forwards into the hanging water.

Have your staff remove the windscreen and store it in the garage. No puddles will splash on to it after this task has been undertaken.

That's a great explanation.
Looks like I'd need something dangling in front of the wheel rather than behind it.

With the BMW the water goes out and to the sides, not very much over the screen. The 90 is very different and it all goes up and over.

The original Mini rally cars had exactly that sort of thing and for similar reasons smile
