I was RMR when I was 19. I found the bottom field hardest.( course we were lugging an SLR around in those days). Being 60 now I doubt I could even lace the boots up! Respect to those who get the beret.
Do they still make them tab over the bridge the hard way?

I did P Coy in the winter of 88/89. It was brutal, I found the stretcher race the hardest, was being punched in the face by a nasty bd nco for a mile or so because he wanted me to jack but the ds intervened and yanked him away.
Hallucinated the last half mile...
Two ex 10 Para guys jacked on the log run, couldn’t believe it. They looked like (what I thought were) perfect recruits for the regiment. Realigned my point of view rather sharply to ‘its all in the mind’.

I did it for a forces charity a few years back. Staff struck my lid ( only one strike though ) for leaning, until he realised I was leaning because my fking shoulder was dislocated. I got to the end though.

From the "Who Dares Wins" TV show (I know, it's not exactly reliable) they were saying that women can apply for any courses or roles within the military that men can apply for, they were indicating that meant selection too.

Pass I am afraid. I haven't been near the place since 1979! I expect someone is still polishing the RMR block though!

I assumed he was referring to Lympstone.

Not that bridge, the one I was thinking of was the hump back bridge on the R.M. 30 miler. It has got a name, but I forget what that is.

That’s right, it’s the one where they make them go over the struts, rather than the deck.

I did P - Coy in April 85 over 2 days while in the TA .
Part of the training approx 6 week ends previously was to do bits , say one event on the Sat and another on the Sun am .
We never practiced Milling or ever saw the trainasium , until the final week end .
Also the taster bits were short in training not the full length until the final week end .
I understand the regulars do it all over 3 days , while the TA complete the same crammed into 2 days ?

Out of 21 that started the real P Coy only 2 passed , myself and another guy .

Interestingly , in the preceding September my CO from a normal infantry TA regiment suggested I apply .So I arrived one Tue pm at the Duke of York’s Barracks Chelsea to find about 200 blokes .
First thing they did was size us up and you had to run round the running track some 800 m
The last 1/2 were told to leave .
Then we did a timed 100 m carrying in a fireman’s lift a guy your size . Again last / slowest sent away .
Final 50 they asked your name etc .

From that 50 over virtually every W/E ( excluding xmas ) we were whittled down to the final 21 by April the following year .
Physical tests and mental .
Thought the DS were very good ......seen it all before .

You guys that think you are fit running marathons etc .....just one thought I used to train throughout the winter 85/86 running through the streets of London wearing combat boots ( not Nike’s ) carrying a 4 ft scaffolding pole , to try and copy carrying a 11 lb loaded SLR .
Running waving your free arms is waaaay much easier than carrying a 11 lb rifle .

Nobody I knew ( some good blokes ) ever did it twice btw .

As said ^^^ Brize was a holiday , with the TA it’s a 2 week course and 1/3 rd of the guys are Paras , 1/3 rd RM , and the other 1/3 rd SAS .

She’s done well but there’s a risk with her ankles ....ladies bones / feet are smaller .
If I remember correctly summer 86 you eventually jumped carrying you own body weight in your “container “

I vaguely remember a lady fracturing her ankles attempting the RM selection ?

Anyhow wish her well .

I did the TA one too!

Although we had to pass a ‘mock’ P Coy before being allowed to do the real thing at the para depot in Aldershot.

Re the SLR, when I was in a regular infantry regiment, we tucked the rifle into the webbing belt and ran with one hand holding it in place, the other swinging.

In the TA paras there was none of that, you had to run with the rifle in the shoulder almost ready to fire. Only if nobody was looking could you let your arms drop and hold it across the body. And you could not even think about using the sling.

^ Same, but had done 5 years in a para reg before going in the Brits, weird bit was the balloon, most disconcerting compared to going out in a big stick, but the breakfasts were good smile

I was at a para trained unit for my first posting but didn't get any further than build up training before my chest creamed in.

At the time we were told that of there was a female on your course than that course would have a thrashing until she quit no matter how many of the blokes left first. Obviously opinion from the top has changed!

The last balloon drops were mid 90’s IIRC. That’s a way back.
