As usual, as with congestion, public transport or whatever - we will get a South East/London based solution foisted on the rest of us.

I dont have asthma and neither does anyone in my family. You're basically saying you're right to burn cheap fuel is more important than other people's right to breathe clean air. Pretty fked up.
Do you own or use a car? Or train, or bus? Do you use electricity, some of which is produced by the use of fossil fuels?

Or is only others' activities that are a problem?

I actually live very close to Drax and have a wood burner in my living room. I accept any and all legislation that moves things forwards in terms of protecting people's health even if it does cost me a bit more. If you don't want to accept that sort of thing you just sound like a whiny little girl. "Oh poor me, I might have to spend a bit of money and forgo upgrading my car for an extra year sob sob sob".

I just want to be left in peace & not have others' problems made into my problems. My house has had the fire since it was built many years ago & AFAIC can be left the hell alone.
What you do or don't accept isn't relevant to my opinion.

As for the whiny little girl comments, I don't give a damn what you think.

Because they make for a warm sitting space and speak to a very elemental part of us.

Energy diversity is a good thing indeed - see recent news articles about preparing for pandemic induced blackouts.

Going back to air quality not improving as expected - expected by who? Calculated using what methodology?
There is so much wrong with this in 4 sentences...

How is a coal fire 'speaking to an elemental part of us'? We've had coal fires for what, 200 years of our few hundred thousand year history.

As for 'pandemic induced blackouts', that is Daily Mail nonsense. A wind turbine doesn't stop because of a virus, and the thermal power stations have taken robust action to keep staff safe so they dont have to self isolate. For what it's worth there is about a 35% margin of available generation today, which is considerably more than you would normally get. Power demand is very low with businesses being shut.

As others have said, if you value looking at a nice cosy fire over other people's health then your priorities need looking at. Coal isn't even a cheap way to heat your house, there are very few logical arguments to switch to a better heat source.

No, they can't run on wood...
...unless they were designed that way from the start.
Need a much larger firebox due to the lower energy density of wood.
See multifuel stove. Even the recommended airflow is different for the different fuels.

I respect your right to st in the yard if you so wish.

(Little known fact- you can have a st in public & the police can't do you for it. Provided, obviously, that you don't take your trousers down first.)

More fun facts. Early American steam trains were more often designed to run off wood because it was easier and cheaper to buy in remote places rather than shipping coal out. UK steam trains burnt coal because it was more abundant here.

Air quality hasn’t improved as much as expected during the lockdown in England and Wales, in part due to residential wood burning. When will people en masse start to “get it” that wood burners are an unnecessary and significant source of pollution?

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/apr/0...
All through the winter I've been using my fireplace.

1 Will you pay for electricity used in place of my log fire? You want the change, surely you should pay for it.

2 Please confirm what I should do with the 20 tons of firewood I have from lopping a load of trees to give light to my solar array. Will you be disposing of them & making good any money I would have got from selling a few bags of logs here & there? Again, you want the change therefore you should fund it.
laugh

Seriously, what are you on about? Breathing in all that self generated pollution has obviously addled your brain.

You’ve lost your way and are a victim of yourself.

It's still a bit obnoxious though.
