Does anyone suffer from this? If so, how do you cope?

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/

Mine is at times quite bad, where I sneeze time after time all day, then next day I wake up feeling very groggy and nose very stuffy. For years, I have tried to manage it via taking hayfever tablets but at times they do naff all.

The sprays are no good as soon as I use them, it sets me off.

Interested to know peoples thoughts, as I am damaging my eyes by them watering due to it and then I rub them as they itch/water.

Cheers

Me. I have used Beconase on prescription for thirty five years to control it, it does take a few days to get going though, so you will find it aggravating at first.

35 years? Jesus.

Do you use that every day now? Are you able to keep control of it?

I suffered for years, thinking it was a side effect of hay fever.

Sore eyes mainly and runny nose, very susceptible to things eg hairspray, paint and new carpet, certain cleaning agents.

However when 30 years of cat ownership came to an end so, gradually did the symptoms. Not immediately but after a couple of years and when the vacuum stopped picking up fine cat hairs I was free of symptoms.

Another vote for Beconase here, just remember not to squirt it so that it goes straight down your throat. My nurse told me to bend over with head between knees and the squirt it..sounds weird but it does work thumbup

A squirt up each nostril in the morning, and another at night. Doesn't bother me at all, unless I run out of Beconase...

Yep, I suffer too. I used to be allergic to house dust but that wore off in my late teens, then developed hay fever which has since gone. These have now been replaced by allergic rhinitis. I find that excessive tiredness triggers it along with something I can't put my finger on. I had an bout of it the other day, woke up, couldn't stop sneezing then as the morning went on, I felt completely blocked up. By the following morning I was all clear. I will have to try Beconase in the hope it works.

Nice to see it's more common than I thought.

Is this the spray?

I have had cats all my life, but some dogs set me off, mainly a friend's golden retriever thingy. Having said that about cats, when I moved out of home and got a house with my ex, we got a cat which promptly set me off on a sneezing for Britain campaign. It lasted a few weeks, then slowly went and never returned.

Beconase is expensive. The active ingredient is what you need, so cheaper brands work exactly the same.

Been using daily for 12 years myself.

Suffered for years myself, could barely go outside in the summer In my late 20s. Was using all sorts of expensive antihistamines which had limited effect. In the end got it 95% cured with a single course of Homeopathy.

I didn’t believe in it - makes no scientific sense to me - but was ready to try anything. What they gave me was both inert and diluted to the point of irrelevance, but worked brilliantly. So may be some kind of placebo, but best £50 I’ve ever spent in my life.

Another vote for beconase here. I'm like you OP I really suffer usually, without the nasal spray I have weekly bouts of it that basically completely wipe me out.

Never had anything like this until a few years back, a holiday in Corfu and a massive reaction to some plant life there. Nose pouring, eyes melttng, just horrible. Broke the habit of a lifetime on the advice of my wife and went to the doctors there.

Hay fever to me was a sneeze in the Summer months, and that was it.

Seems to be getting worse with various things now, a Chinese takeaway has to be from certain places that don't have high levels of MSG, as I had one once and found myself unable to sleep or breathe properly.

Dust really effects me too, causing sneezing bouts and a blocked up nose.

I don't think the current stuff is down to the cat though, but I am thinking about some form of allergy testing just to find out more.

Feel like a hyperchondriac now as I have constant hayfever/allergy tablets on my desk at work and sniff Beconaze each morning before I leave the house. hehe

Six quid a month is expensive? Nothing else improves my quality of life for so little expense.

I’ve had this all my life, too. Used to be quite grim and sprays etc didn’t really help. What made the biggest improvement, Esp in summer months is nose filters, I used Woody Knows and they have been a revelation (esp when riding my bike). I have also installed auto HEPA filter things in the house and that keeps it at bay at home.

I've had this for the last 6 years or so. Started with beconase then moved on to prescription stuff, Avamys then Flixonase.

I really don't like pumping steroids up my nose every day, but it's pretty bad without them.

I also use a nose wash stuff called sterimar which does seem to help a bit..

Tried the air purifiers which didn't work, and nose filters. Don't know if they worked because my nose was running too much to tell unfortunately, they just got wet and had to take them off to blow my nose.

It's pretty miserable, when my nose isn't running its blocked, constantly sore, sometimes bleeds..

I've found out what causes mine.. Last year I had 2 months off work and my sense of smell came back, nose was no longer pissing or blocked and sore... It was amazing. It must be either the Aircon or the materials I work with. I'm working on trying to get in to an office based role so I don't have to breathe in stuff that causes it any more.

Reading these replies, I consider myself to be very fortunate in only suffering very lightly nowadays. I did try the Neil Med sinus rinse kit which is a little grim but does seem to work as it actually flushes your nasal passages out. I haven't used mine for a while but would certainly recommend one
