But the Chinese for all their flaws are pretty smart, and plan for the long term. Nothing is worse for business than massive global recession and loss of life. They are never going to display any outward humility of course, but i would be amazed if they didn't quietly sort these places out for good, or aren't doing just that already.
I agree. They might come out of this better than we do, because the won't beat about the bush. might be an uncomfortable long term consequence.

I dont think they can be quietly allowed to do away with the Wet markets, or at least get them so they arent basically a market/bio weapons lab.

They need holding to account, from the international community, if you dont sort your st out then we dont buy your stuff, end of, freeze them out via sanctions until they clean their act up, including allowing inspections by foreign experts. Then the Chinese can use their iron fist over the traders.

Otherwise we are going to get one of these outbreaks every few years, possibly before this one finishes.

Their population needs educating, dont throw coins into plane engines, dont gob everywhere and stop trying to transport horrible, infested products back and forth on flights.

And the hand wringers will be out calling racist, I personally have nothing against the Chinese but I, like many are seriously angry and upset that our lives are being disrupted, people are dying because they cant manage to not create new and exciting viruses every few years, and I saw a video of someone clubbing a dog to death, I like dogs, dont club them please., if you simply have to kill somethign find a method other than using it as a fking canine Pinata.

We need the right to say when other groups are doing stuff that is detrimental, this virus didnt eminate from Black Puddings on Bury Market did it, wasnt from our local Artisan market.

The politicos are no different from the ones in the EU. Do they apologise for the economic destruction wrecked upon Southern Europe. It's the money men below them that will wield the power and they are probably seething at what has happened. Their equivalent of Bezos has donated masks and other materials to the US. There's a good chance the vaccine will probably me made/developed there as well.
they are very different to EU in that they don't have politics. So providing they prevent a mass uprising, this lot would have no issue in stopping a particular way of life/industry if it helped their long term planning.

Makes them more effective at things like lockdown, and saying "wet markets stop now", than EU. if they see the link, they can i think will just do it.

Listen, China gave the world fireworks. And most of the non-consumables sold in our pound shops. We should be forever grateful.

I will leave it up to the likes of trump. I bet he comes up with some sort of tariff on everything out of china to make up for the trillions of dollars this will have cost by the end.
As shown he can influence any mood in the american people so it will be something popular to get him re-elected.

Indeed, so how about waiting until you're less emotional before me(a!)ting out blame and trying to figure out what must be done?

From the CV thread:

Interesting 2007 paper which to some extent informed the 2011 govt strategy:

“The presence of a large reservoir of SARS-CoV-like viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of eating exotic mammals in southern China, is a time bomb. The possibility of the reemergence of SARS and other novel viruses from animals or laboratories and therefore the need for preparedness should not be ignored.”

Time to learn that lesson methinks.

Counterpoint: rather than everyone getting stern with China, we will see a true impact of the economic and cultural balance of power shift - China will get to be "right" even when they are "wrong", for risk of offending them....the way Western powers have been for two centuries.

You can't punish entire populations for the actions of their governments or certain individuals. I would have thought the end of WWI leading into WWII shows you why that line of thinking is best not to revisit.

What you can do is have an open discussion, to address the root causes (I doubt wealthy Chinese people purchase their food from these places) and ultimately increase the ability of our own societies to look after their own needs.

Maybe give them another chance ?

I didnt think I was being overly emotional in what I said, I dont think my viewpoint will chance to be honest.

China is a global neighbour, and like I have no issue with my neighbour next door I might do if he periodically and inexplicably launched a salvo of dog turds over the fence from his Labradors.

I said what I believe what needs to be done, but I am guessing its way more complicated.

Exactly this! Having been to China they have a deplorable attitude to hygiene and the bits of animals we would throw any as not fit for a dog!! (used to work for a Chinese telco....you know which one!!)
you only have to watch one Border Patrol episode to see that the Chinese have no regards for hygiene or contamination of other nations ecosysytems.

In the absence of any sign of US global leadership, China will use this as a soft power grab. I expect now that they seem to have it mostly under control at home they will start very publicly shipping doctors/medics/equipment/supplies/drugs to western countries to 'help'. We're not really in a position to say no. Meanwhile they'll be buying up every depressed asset and land they can get their hands on. Their propagandists will start spinning the initial source of the outbreak, their initial response and their subsequent global relief efforts. They will subtly rewrite history and China will come out of this diplomatically stronger and richer. IMHO.

The big question is will they actually do anything about their abysmal food safety standards and disgusting obsession with mixing fresh food and exotic wildlife before they kill us all accidentally.

You can say the same about almost any other developing country.

Been to India recently?

I do agree with this, they are now in a position to "save the world"

The world will sing their praises.

Saying that we found an unlikely hero this week with Cuba. The US simply did nothing to help.

Developing country? They've got the world's second largest economy!

Last time I was in Hyderabad I stayed in a five star hotel that would shame most western ones.

As stated above, China's problem that it has bestowed on the planet is its frankly medieval attitudes to animals, the treatment and eating thereof.

Somewhere in China accounts like this are being classified under 'useful idiot' for the social media/soft power war to come.
