Can Sir Keir Starmer revive the Labour Party?
Discussion
I think Batley and Spen is going to be a disaster for Starmer.
Labour have picked the sister of Jo Cox as their candidate. While I can totally understand the reasons, it suggests selection based on "who you are rather than what you are" which is the opposite of what Labour should be about. And it gives the impression that they are trying to win on emotional grounds rather than policy grounds, furthering the impression that they no policies.
Plus Galloway is going to split the Labour vote, a large part of which is Muslim.
I am useless at predictions but I will make one anyway - I think that the Conservatives will win the seat.

Is this for real?!!
It is.Batley has a large Pakistani population whose vote is important - clearly at the expense of everyone else who lives there. Unlike university cities like Sheffield or Leeds, Batley is a backwater not known for posturing white knights but Labour has made their priorities quite clear.
I hope the Tories wipe them out - it's no less than they deserve.
This reminds me of the time Labour put up Tamsin Dunwoody on the basis of her surname (she's the late Gwyneth's daughter) to contest Crewe and Nantwich in 2008.
Tamsin's campaign focussed narrowly on the crucial issue of the relative poshness of her Tory opponent.
She lost, with a >7000 majority head start.
I know name recognition is a thing, but people instinctively react against the whiff of nepotism and cronyism and dynastic succession. Labour (of all parties) should stop doing it.

Evidently.............
The Labour candidate is getting grief from some Muslim pressure group about clamping down on one form of racism (anti semitism) and not another.type that affects them
What they need is Richard "let me at 'em") Burgon.
He would surely reassure them by telling them that if he became Foreign secretary he would opt to nuke Israel in any future Labour Government

Absolutely. Richard would make it absolutely clear that he would be prepared to use Trident. He would surely reassure them by telling them that if he became Foreign secretary he would opt to nuke Israel in any future Labour Government

In fairness to Starmer, it's really really difficult being supportive of LGBTQ rights and women's equality AND Islam, in the same leaflet.https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/jun/20/m...
The oil and water of Labour policy-making.
Here's the Survation polling for the constituency.

The betting odds have the conservatives at about 2:1 on, which isn't exactly a done-deal, there's still plenty of room for Labour to win there. It'll quite possibly all be down to how many votes George Galloway takes.

What is it about David Miliband that means he has some sort of mythical 'king asleep under the mountain' aura for some people (often people who aren't or never have been Labour voters)? What has he ever said or done to make so many people dream of the day when he will return from across the sea, risen anew from misty Lyonesse, to rescue Albion and usher in a new age of...whatever it is he stands for.
I've always preferred their other brother, Steve, although I've not taken much notice of his work since he released Abracadabra back in the 80sBigS said:
