There are a lot of strong opinions around Covid 19 and there is a huge quantity of data which is not all consistent.
Please try and discuss this in a polite manner and be tolerant of others’ views.

Appreciate it wasn't a dig as such but thought it might be interesting for people to know. Oh and our dept has enough PPE at present to last us roughly 30 weeks.
Isn't this stockpiling? More than a month's supply seems overkill, especially when there are still local shortages being experienced.

NHS front line staff will probably get a pay rise of some sort, and there will be stealth tax rises to pay for it.
Slight aside, but I was watching an old, extended interview with Ronald Reagan back from 1976, a few years before he won the Republican nomination to run for president.

He rather wisely suggested that any politician who proposes a spending increase should propose the tax rise which would pay for it. Of course, that's simplistic and we don't have a hypothecated tax system, but his broad point still stands nearly 50 years later.

When we finally get out of this mess we will have added hundreds of billions to the national debt. Tax rises will be necessary just to fund the additional interest payments, before we even get to awarding pay rises.
We'll inflate some of it away, the freedom of having our own currency, but it's hard to see how an increase in tax is avoidable.

Just a little aside from the serious health issues of this thread!

What do folk reckon will be the longterm fallout on professional services? - not really life or death are they?., accountants, solicitors, estate agents, etc.

NHS are currently the Premier Front Line Service - correctly so, and I can see this continuing afters - yes!!

Sorry perhaps a wine glass too far smile

Stay safe
What a bizarre thing to say.

Firstly, I'm in awe of what frontline care workers are doing at the moment and can't comprehend what they're going through. But, as an accountant I'm flat out trying to save businesses, their employees and in some cases trying to talk some owners down from the edge. Try thinking before you speak.

Perhaps I know more about solicitors than you do Eddie

Even if I don't know more than you, there was something in the past that I was involved in and a newish solicitor made a fatal mistake in notifying me that he had never dealt with a..................before and it was an experience for him

I paid a solicitor 1 big one for that, would be more today

Don't get me wrong here Eddie, there are no doubt some decent solicitors about but they all do seem to charge extortionate prices

You surely aren't a solicitor

Should you be a solicitor, you have great qualities in hiding your depth of knowledge and open mind

Perhaps you could post up your hourly rate and it could be compared with NHS staff wages

At the moment £0 per hour. In three weeks I've done about 5 hours of chargeable time. Idiots often have the view that accountants just help people evade tax. As opposed to the reality that many accountants help honest people run honest businesses that pay their taxes and employ most of the people in this country. Without them we wouldn't have an NHS.

Some people don't have a clue about the average business in this country. Rather sad.

No but there's nothing wrong with changing it to be more relevant.
