Highlighted bit ... of course it is, if the App will be of any use, and that is it's stumbling block as we haven't had a need to carry ID cards since WW2 although I see no issue with ID cards myself as I'm neither someone who has something to hide from the authorities, an illegal immigrant, or a drug dealer, last time I checked!
I see plenty wrong with being forced to carry ID cards. Nothing to hide, nothing to fear doesn't quite cut it for me personally.
Genuinely asking, care to explain your fear of carrying an ID card or ID App?
No offence taken smile

I predict policy creep and it's too late once it's happened. I know others are cool with it and that's fine, but I've built up a serious mistrust of all parties in authority over the years. They become greedy for info and data when there's often no need whatsoever.

I think it's a box that once opened will be massively abused by those in power and those that would like to think they are.

Thanks. It seems to demonstrate the lack of trust (not just you) in our Govt. in 2020 that wasn't widespread in the 1940's (except for the criminal elements) I suspect. FWIW, the 1940's ID card continued to be carried until the early '50's but I have no recollection of it being an issue, and as you know, there are plenty of countries across Europe and ROW that require a person to carry ID when out and about and I don't recall many problems doing so.

Anyhow, back on topic, has anyone asked how those of us who have old smartphones are going to be provided with a shiny, new one yet?

The way I see it I already have an ID card in the form of my driving license.

Seems a fuss about nothing IMO.

Singapore are trialling dongles I believe. Plenty of possibilities that don't depend on a phone app.

Just found out tonight that software regarding this has been installed on mine and the families iPhones so I assume everyone’s. If you go into settings, privacy then health it’s in there. Says it’s to be used with the coved tracking app! No idea when it’s been installed etc as I’ve not accepted anything etc.

It's part of the latest iOS update.

It can't be used without an approved tracking app activating it and you can switch it off.

Same with Google. Turned up last week some time.

Unless I'm very mistaken it isn't doing anything unless you download an app for it to work with, and even then you need to have bluetooth and location turned on.

I expect there is more to this.
Going from the history of the current Govt, I think it is just they are feckwits. Assuming we double their IQs.
"The now-abandoned NHS app was tested on the Isle of Wight where it was downloaded more than 50,000 times.
However, it registered only about 4% of the iPhones that were nearby.
Islanders have now been asked to delete it."

World Beating!
It wasn’t developed by the NHS either but it’s being tagged as such to deflect from the real developers / failures.

If I have been reading it correctly then the app (if one is downloaded) will need to be enabled separate to bluetooth. Meaning you can disable the app directly. As it stands, no app, nothing will happen as there is nothing to interact with. This was the deal with Apple and Google leaving the user in charge of privacy. Don't know what the NHS app did as it would not be using this system availability I think?

I also understand that at a suitable date it will be removed out of the code.

It’s good to see that 40-odd percent would use an App.

I have loaded the French StopCovid App 3-weeks ago - it’s in my interest. The only trouble is that a mere 1.5million have followed suit, so it’s next to useless.

When we have asked others why the have not loaded we have heard stuff like “I thought it was linked to Facebook”, but in the case of our cleaner, she had never even heard of it.

The theory seems to be, we should all bury our heads in the sand and the a Government will make it go away.

There are apparently a lot of people out there who have taken the term "contact tracing" to mean it literally tracks the people in your contacts.

Probably a mix of ignorance and poor explanations from Government on exactly how it works but I guess academic until they actually have an app to use.

FYI - I think the way this is going, you will also need to turn off your WIFI and Bluetooth whenever you are near a place with a WIFI hotspot or, makesure that you do not auto-login to WIFI hotspots.

I login to many WIFI hot-spots (EE, BT, resturants, motorway service stations) and if you don't want to be tracked you will need to avoid all of these, it won't be just about the phone app - imho.

Is anybody genuinely surprised that this is the cluster**** that it is?

The handling of this is turning into something that would be rejected as a script on the basis that even satire wouldn't justify it.

Millions and millions wasted, just like almost every government project.

If they're so keen to track people why do you think they've done such an appalling job of developing an app and getting it out there?

It doesn't exactly suggest shadowy sinister motives as if that was the case (and no reasons given why they'd want to "track" people) you'd think they'd just rush something out that could do it.

It's really weird that people think like this.

This seems to have thoroughly blown up on social media. What people are seeing is the result of an operating system update that was released a few weeks ago on both iOS and Android. It’s the foundation for the C19 tracing apps that use the Google/ Apple system. It’s not an app in itself, and without installing an app to make use of it it does precisely nothing.

In terms of it ‘appearing’ on peoples phones this will be due to them either having automatic update turned on, or people manually installing the update without reading the release notes. It was very clearly stated what it was in the release notes for both OS’s.

That'll be the next thing.

Scores of people running out of date operating systems full of vulnerabilities that criminals can and will exploit because they "don't trust the Government".

Indeed. I had a very long round robin WhatsApp message from a colleague asking everyone to remove her from our contacts if we used the app. My reply pointing out she was talking bks (I phrased it more politely than that hehe ) fell on largely deaf ears sadly.
