Demoprats...how old are you?
Younger than you hopefully.
Although I've only been on PH for over a year its clear a bit of name calling is a PH tradition isn't it?

Or am I to be told by some grandads that I'm out of line on this?
Not out of line, just childish. But hey, it’s your call.

I think I’ve got the hang of this.

I wonder if they have that picture on the mantelpiece. Maybe they could dress it up with Christmas hats etc and use it for their festive cards.

Link doesn't work.

In any case I thought they pleaded guilty to a minor misdemeanour and paid a small fine. Should never have been charged with anything for protecting their property from a mob of course, but that is another story.

That means they did break the law doesn't it. Even the Americans have rules about waving guns about.

I think pinning a minor infringement on them was more about placating the mob currently burning your city, with popular support, rather than punishing the couple for having actually done something wrong.

They did plead guilty, though, which is an acknowledgement that they acted illegally.

I'm fully aware of how the US justice system works. It's not relevant to my point, though. As part of the plea deal, they acknowledge that their actions broke the law.

It's not though is it.

If someone put a gun to your head you would probably admit anything they tell you.

Except that's not at all akin to what happens, especially when you're a wealthy upper-class man with expensive lawyers.

If they felt they had a better chance of avoiding successful prosecution by chancing a jury trial, they would have.

97% of defendants in US federal courts take a plea bargain and 94% of those in state courts and they do so, even if innocent, due to the fact that the plea bargain sentence is usually lighter than the sentence if found guilty. This is the case whether the defendant has "expensive lawyers" or not. The role of the lawyer would usually be to negotiate said plea bargain and that is where you are getting for paying for better advice.

For comparison the number pleading guilty in England & Wales is 70% (where you have the incentive of a lighter sentence but cannot usually trade the possibility of prison for the certainty of a fine and/or community service).

In this instance they are expensive lawyers, so perhaps they knew what the percentages were in some detail. hehe
