So, these "masks" then. Can I still stick an old tea towel or a pair of old undies around my face and be legal ?
How about going full retard and sporting a proper "Invisible Man" look ?
At the start of all this I saw a bloke in Tesco with a fully bandaged up head (I kid you not) and I quite liked the look. It shows a level of commitment that I have not seen since.
Will any old rag do ? Or will shop staff judge my mask and throw me out on my ear ?
That's an interesting question. The Unions are already warning that mandatory masks will likely lead to increased attacks on shop workers, as they will essentially policing the policy. How about going full retard and sporting a proper "Invisible Man" look ?

I do remember that some of the earlier research suggested that 'any old mask' really won't do. In some cases it creates an enlarged wet spot around the mouth area, thereby more readily facilitating the transfer of the virus from the outside to the inside. (ie, you're MORE likely to contract the bug with the wrong type of mask.) Perhaps that research has been superseded?
Either way my personal opinion is that the move to masks is less about what is needed so much as a recognition by Government that lock down has gone, and aside from some attempts at regional restrictions (such as in Leicester) it aint coming back in the form that it was. Getting people accustomed to wearing masks before the winter wave makes some sense, especially if the Government advises that the type of mask to be used goes from a pair of old undies (today) to a proper bought in mask of some sort come October

I'm struggling to see the fanbois for Stovey, Heli, Piha, mx5nut, markyb, you and bitstewie talking amongst yourselves. It’s not my fault people struggle to find good things to talk about, why not post some instead of constantly saying you’re “not a fan but” every day and never actually criticising anything he does and now even trying to stop others criticising him.
“I’m not a fan but” I was quite happy to point out the good points of the pre covid budget or the JRS or his build build build speech etc.
What do you think he’s done well during the pandemic?

What a sad reflection on society that so many are enraged by anti public health propaganda they read on social media that shop staff have to go to work in fear of violence. markyb_lcy said:

It is not necessarily being a Tory that is the issue, I know plenty of Conservative voters, party members and even Councillors who think this Government are utterly useless and that Johnson is unfit to hold the office of PM, but on PH, the second you don't follow the "Johnson is great" mantra, then that automatically puts you into the category of "the enemy."
Do not expect rational thought from the Johnson supporters on this thread, none has been displayed in all the countless posts on all volumes of this interminable hamster-wheel.
Today is just another example of attempting (and failing as per usual) to defend the indefensible.
Yep, there is IMO a huge difference between being a conservative supporter and being a member of the Boris cult. You'll see members of the latter laying into Cameron, May etc but the moment anyone says anything negative about their Dear Leader Boris, they'll have you down as a Corbyn-worshipping, rabid snowflake marxist.Do not expect rational thought from the Johnson supporters on this thread, none has been displayed in all the countless posts on all volumes of this interminable hamster-wheel.

It’s obviously not the government’s fault in any way for not advising mask wearing earlier though. That was due to some new mask wearing science and shortages of home made face coverings or something.
When they can't criticise their leader (who is PM) for bringing out a policy they disagree with, they'll blame whatever "elite" they think they can. The BBC, the WHO, lefties, marxists, corbyn etc
Responsibility for the broader lockdown is shared but on the specifics of compulsory mask wearing Boris and his team are overwhelmingly at fault. It is just focus group driven nonsense with no rational justification. Brought in purely because wee Krankie brought it in in Scotland and so Boris and co are terrified of being attacked by the media over it.
More retailers will likely go under due to it and it is clear where the blame lies.

I think problems will arise with "approved masks" though. Will they be kitemarked ? Who will check them ? Etc etc.
The legislation stipulates "face coverings" - not masks per se.
I was being flippant with my earlier comments.

A scarf wrapped around should be fine.

Can we not discuss Boris on a thread about Boris?
Of course. I was just amused at the references to "Boris Ultras" and "fanbois" when the majority of the posters on here are critical of the Government, and Boris in particular. This habit of dehumanising opponents doesn't make for a particularly rational debate.JagLover said:

If it meets the criteria then nobody can object, right ?. One for the objectors on this forum ...

You mean like posting a time line of the government's meandering policy changes? Did I just imagine doing that?Or posting about the actual usage of masks? I'm sure I did something like that?
Are you just selectively blind when it comes to other people's posts?
And please do tell me where I've tried to stop people from criticising him? Pointing out that the majority of posters on here are critical of Boris is not exactly controversial, and not remotely an attempt to stop you doing anything.

Very little on here has actually been said about the masks, but you are desperate to paint anyone who disagrees with the new rules as a Boris Ultra. This is plainly wrong, as evidenced by just about all the responses on the other Coronavirus threads.
I'm slagging off your approach, not the argument around masks.
What argument have I lost, by the way? if I haven't had any discussion on the subject at hand, how can you know what my view is on the subject to determine I have already lost the argument?
I suspect, as many others have suggested, this is reactionary rather than following the science. So which side of the argument am I on now, the right side that you are on, the victorious side
There's not right or wrong side to having an opinion. Unfortunately, your arrogance can only see your own thoughts as being the correct ones.

I don't think you're immune to that criticism yourself. Your rabid dislike of Johnson is clear in every post you make on the subject. I'd suggest that you too are far from balanced in your opinionsEl stovey said:

Tuna is in no position to criticise anyone else's high post count on this thread.
Jokes aside - love him or hate him, you'd expect Boris to be firmly on the anti mask side of this debate, especially as the "anti" side have decided to draw it on existing political lines.
Must make you wonder what he's seen that's got him rattled enough to come down on the other side of this one.

He does't have a side, he's 100% neutral and just calls things as they are. It's just a coincidence that he's drawn to threads about Johnson and other high profile Brexiters and angrily defends them, occasionally trolling and derailing the thread before flouncing off when the things they've done make them indefensible.
