I'm not on twitter nor any social media (unless you call PHs social media, I suppose it is but restricted).
But I'm sure I read somewhere you needed to be at least a teenager to have a twitter account? Perhaps it's changed?

I knew nothing of this racist tweet until I read it on here.
How some (like a few on here who virtually 'live' on PHs) can have twitterati and mugbook and other accounts as well is beyond me?

'Live' is the appropriate word, they haven't the first idea of 'how to'.

It didn't seem right to start a thread specifically but if anyone thinks we've got this sorted Police have arrested a 12-year-old kid after racist messages were sent to Crystal Palace footballer Wilfried Zaha.

I can't even post them up because that st would get me banned but go look at his Twitter feed to see the sort of st that still goes on in 2020.

Sad times.
Some multimillionaire football as been being called names off a 12 year old kid, stop the press call the army out. People need to get a grip and grow up like that kid will hopefully do you know when he actually does grow up.
Yes because being rich makes it hurt less when people hurl racist abuse.

The funny thing is you're one of the reactionaries who no noubt would be very keen to see this kid locked up and punished in a different set of circumstances.

Now he's just a poor little kid who will grow up one day.

What do you consider different about this set of circumstances scratchchin

Risible.

Yep, you're supposed to be at least 13 to open any social media account, but there's no way to validate that - it relies on the user to be honest when they register.

Football is such an odd one to me because you can guarantee the same people more than happy to throw racism at a black player. Will be chanting there worship of a black player if he plays for there team.

It’s not a purely race motivated attack its hate of the other team, That leads to rascist attacks.

Either way it’s not okay just odd.

its even more pathetic and short sighted if people use racism in such a fashion, and whilst it may not be race motivated, it is racism. Being racist is like being pregnant, you can't be a little bit pregnant, or a little bit racist, you are or you aren't

What about unconscious bias?

That's an interesting point, but not what the poster i answered was talking about. A good point for discussion though would you care to expand? For me, unconscious bias is still racism, albeit as you say, the perpetrator may be unaware of their actions, or why they are acting that way. Positive discrimination is still a form of racism also. I guess my point is/was, the effects and reasons for racist behaviour may vary hugely, but racism is racism?

I guess my question is how would you ever know if you were or were not racist since unconscious bias is a very difficult thing to rule out.

I thought that's what you meant. Unfortunately and being brutally honest, regardless if the person knows they are being racist, they ARE being racist, hence my holistic definition earlier. That said, we can do something about unconscious bias and, perhaps it would be great place to start with as some who display 'conscious racism' are sadly beyond help?

Can't say I agree with whole groups being written off as beyond help, the work of Daryl Davis makes me sure that some people are truly mis guided.

Why I said 'some' brother man! As an idealistic fool, I believe everyone has the potential to be better than the worst thing they have ever done. Some are not given the opportunity, some dont take it when given

You pay me the sort of money he's on anyone can call me as many nasty names as they want.
It not a victimless crime but being called nasty names and being offered is as close as you are going to get.
Do you think this footballer as spent the last few night in tears being consoled by his family because of it? I know racism is right at the top of the offence League table at the moment but ulimately it's just sad childish name calling.

And I don't want to destroy anyone's dream's here but there will always be nasty sods calling people names.

Black gloves at the cricket? Should raise a few eyebrows amongst people of my age!
Funny, I was just watching Michael Holding's speech.

The thing that stood out is Lewis Howard Latimer inventing the carbon filament bulb (which he did alongside Joseph Nichols) so unless they're both black then he's doing the opposite of whitewashing.

By all means give the inventor the credit he deserves but imagine history having been re-rewritten a century down the line. Political correctness doesn't necessarily equate to the truth.
Do you mind giving a bit of background to this? Was there some sort of controversy with regards Lewis Howard Latimer and Joseph Nichols?

I'm out of the loop. Although I did hear what Michael Holding had to say as he is man for which I have immense respect.

Edit: please ignore. I understand the context now.

Holding's point was that racism places the white man Edison as the inventor rather than Latimer who made a viable bulb, while himself omitting the white co inventor of that bulb.

I say that was the only part that stood out to me as non factual but the comments about the racist portrayal of Jesus as white and Judas as black also distort the truth, as Africans and East Asians paint Jesus in their likeness, while a white Jesus as portrayed in Europe probably isn't exactly whitewashing Middle-Eastern or possibly Roman skin.

Yes, I totally agree.

I also found it strange that he seems to be insinuating that blacks are not celebrated in West, or rather, that their achievements aren't recognised. Well, there probably isn't a single cricketer in this country who doesn't know, and revere the name 'Whispering Death'.

Oddly even for someone paid the amount of money he's paid he still has an issue with it.

Sent a photo of the KKK and told he would be visited by a "ghost".

Why do you think he might be a bit pissed at that?

I suppose this kid will now be subjected to the full force of twitterlaw, deplatformed, his family hounded out their house, their jobs, potential employers notified of his misdeed, his school expelling him, antifa daubing slogans anywhere he's seen, the news media camped outside, local shops refusing to admit him etc etc...Maybe not but id not be entirely surprised.

I've no idea.

Oddly my first thought was for Wilfried Zaha not the person who sent him racist abuse.

Priorities eh.
