Just watching ITV news about the free school meals issue. These poor children who’s parents can’t afford to feed them....they can wear Nike Air Max trainers though
...and? This validates their selfish decision to buy big brand tat over cheap, nutritious food? I'm not sure how many times this has been said, or will be, but its not the kids fault. They are kids. Powerless. And hungry. What's your solution. Let them eat Air Max?
So they have enough money to feed the children but choose not to.
We the tax payer then have to provide the money AGAIN so as not to disadvantage the child.
What next, do we have to pay her rent as she really wanted that Gucci handbag and without it the child may end up on the street.
And come Christmas do we have to pay the heating bill as she was that stressed she needed a weekend away from the kids and went on holiday?
Where does it end.
This is the problem, it’s why I suggested earlier that legal enforcement is required. Neglect your child and be hauled up in court, proven guilty child goes into care.

The poor thing, it is especially hard for her as her kid gets 2 weeks off half term at private school.
Qualified research scientist, hell, she's got no hope of work, i mean who is looking to recruit research scientists at the moment?

Try reading the whole article, or if you already have, read it again more slowly.

"What upsets me the most is the stereotyping of what it is to be a single mum nowadays and callous, derisory comments from people who supposedly represent society,"

Got you pegged hasn't she.

Yes i have. Excuse me for thinking there are far more worthy causes of assistance, and BTW, we are all still paying for her and her kids through Universal Credit.
If you HONESTLY think she cannot afford a pint of fking milk, well more fool you!

She used to live in a big house in acres of land, and moved 4 hours away from her family and friends...hmmm, smart move when you have no job and income?
And whilst restaurants are offering help, no that's not good enough for her, as she is rural (again who's fault is that?) and it is too far to go. Oh, and of course she wants the vouchers to spend as she likes, not the actual food, due to the "stigma" of not wanting people in the supermarket queue to know she is on food stamps etc. So let's get on the BBC to let the whole country know shall we.
She is full of utter st.
Cant afford milk my arse!

Ah, you mean people who can see through the bullst she peddles?

Tell me, how many parents in this country wake up in a morning with more to worry about that her, do you reckon? I mean like people with ill kids, people ill themselves, who have to go to stty arse jobs day in day out to pay their own way, who's kids dont just have to wear 2nd and uniforms, but also get tthe st kicked out of them everyday for being odd, wrong race, religion, etc etc .

Rural Norfolk, with people giving her food to cook, kid at private svhool etc etc. Tell me, how many families on sink estates in London, with drug gangs ruling the roost would swap with her in a heartbeat?

You White Knight her and hoover up her bullst if you like, but not me.

Did she say that there isn't anybody in a worse position than she is?

No.

There will be plenty of parents in the position that you paint and as you said I'm sure there are families who would swap with her in a heartbeat.

Would you swap with her?

Thought not and I know I wouldn't either because I'm pretty damned comfortable with my first-world problems.

You might be called poo at Paul's but don't take it too literally and spend your life stting on people just because you think they're below you.

They certainly do not, this should be part of the process when it comes down to demanding more money to ‘feed my children’. Income and outgoings to meet a set criteria before money is splashed out. Would have been lovely if people had given me free money when we were bringing up our two children, although we did of course receive a ‘child allowance’.

What pissed me off about people like this is she genuinely thinks she is hard done by. And yet it is most likely she's lead a very easy privileged life, not having to worry about too much, not having to work etc, and she's left for whatever reason moved to the other end of the country, and cannot fathom how life is not so easy anymore, and it is all someone else's fault.

The reality is she is better off than a st load of families in this country who can only dream of living as she now does... regardless of what she had before.

She is not interested in having food for her kids, if she were, she's happily accept it, rather than ask for vouchers to spend as she likes.
I have seen children in genuine poverty with my own eyes, it is heartbreaking too. Sao Paulo, they are everywhere. and if you give the some money, some object, some food, they dont give a st about any "stigma" they are just bloody grateful. We dont know we're born, here in UK.

The article raises more questions than it answers.

Why move away from family if in need?, is the bursary a full one or only covering part of the cost?. How can you claim poverty while paying private school fees?.

I don't think there is enough information to judge. What is more amusing is the BBC scouring the country to find a middle class single mum they can pretend is representative.

Where's the Dad? What is he contributing to the family?

You white knight all you want, but there's millions of us who think she's taking the piss, quite frankly. Again, do you honestly think she cannot afford a pint of milk? A woman with two kids on of whom is in private school........

I'm not white knighting anyone.

She could be an absolutely piss taker for all I know but I think it's a pretty unlikely starting position to put yourself on national media saying "I struggle to feed my kids".

I wonder how long it will be before we see news reports of all the wasted food that was donated.
Two posts on local FB groups I have seen today about a large excess of food donated to charities and them asking for any other places to offload it.

Sticks.

Article says they get a bursary which are means tested, can be 100% of the fees, and sometimes cover uniforms, trips etc.

One thing I have seen is several restaurants and cafes offering free meals which is great, however the two that stuck out to me was one was a falafel bar and the other a bao bun place.

I just can't see your average sink estate parents dragging Jaxon, Chardonnay, tyler and ruby-mai down for a bao bun or a falafel wrap!

This 100%. None of these sad face stories ever come with any actual facts to see where the finances are going wrong.

And yet this sort of vague content free detail is what we seem to have to react to.

More criticality is required. But then you get tagged as "mean" (which is really hurtful - will nobody considered my feelings? I have them too. It takes a lot of effort to keep them buried biggrin).
