I didn't feel quite so disgusted when Turing was pardoned.

It's the Queen's prerogative. Mind you, I remember reading that protocols weren't followed with Turing.

I feel a Google coming on.
The prime minister in a Westminster system has quite limited power. Their main powers are to direct their own party (which can easily fail) and to request something of the Queen (or governor General in other Commonwealth countries).

They aren't able to issue executive orders like the US president, any order given by the PM needs the approval of both houses. That being said, approval can be given by omission (i.e. no one bothering to bring the matter up for debate).

Turing's pardon was a symbolic gesture as it happened decades after his conviction and his death. Stone's commuting is more akin to Johnson pardoning any furlough fraudsters he knew personally. I don't think much of Mr Johnson but I'll credit him with enough brains to say he's not daft enough to try anything like that.

I suppose it's all a good distraction from 71,000 new CV-19 cases in the US yesterday up from 60,000 the day before, anothert 850 deaths.
A total now of almost 3.3m people of which only 1,460,495 are listed as recovered with 1,694,620 ongoing cases.

I know we've all been expecting Trump to pardon/commute the sentence of Stone, but it still comes as a shock. It's full on corrupt now; no smoke, no mirrors. It's an American president showing he has no morals, no scruples, no self respect.

Strangely, I'm embarrassed, like a friend whose been caught out in a dishonest act against other friends. There's the feeling that you'll never be able look on them in the same way again. Now the sham has been revealed. What a shambles.

The real indictment might come in November.
Hopefully, if he wins again there really is no hope for America.

The fact the power is there anyway is extraordinary.

Mind you, America was founded by the rich to benefit the rich.
Agreed. It's not a justice system if you can get let off if you're mates with el Presidente.
Am I not right in saying our prime minister has the same power...?

I wonder how Boris will fair if Trump goes considering how close they are. Trump has never said a bad word against him and helped us out in this Crisis a few times.

Unprecedented, historic corruption: an American president commutes the sentence of a person convicted by a jury of lying to shield that very president.

E. Jean Carroll, who claims Trump raped her two decades ago and sued him for defamation, said the Supreme Court's ruling that the president doesn't have absolute immunity from state legal proceedings means her defamation suit against him should go forward.

This video is well worth a watch:

https://youtu.be/OwUIDNYwZRY

Basically runs through a lot of the myths about the foundation of America and the veneration they have of the past.

As an aside, he has that puffy-faced look of a heavy drinker, I know he's 74 but still...I'm 71 and been known to enjoy a few grogs here and there but I don't have a puffy face from it. biggrin

''Donald Trump has claimed the UK has asked the United States for 200 "desperately needed" ventilators due to a shortage amid the coronavirus crisis.

The US leader described Britain as “great partners” as he said “we’ve got to work it out” and help with the supply of the life-saving equipment.''

At a time when it wasn't a popular thing.

Also US drug companies offered assitance.

The rel issue is Obama distanced himself from old friends like the UK, whereas Trump has embraced them. Sometimes it is better the Devil you know.

Trump doesn't do ANYTHING for anybody unless there's personal gain in it. Do you know how many "friends" have been kicked to the kerb as soon as they're no use to him?

Maybe have a rethink eh?

trump is miles away from even being able to have 'close friends'. A narcissist only deals with transactions.
