So we have been hiding from the virus for almost 4 months now. Looks as if it has been hiding from us for the last 2:

The joke about the masks is that almost nobody knows how to wear them, thus making them absolutely useless.
People stuffing them in pockets after leaving a shop only to fiddle with the damn thing in order to put it on again.
So they have touched both sides and have touched their face without washing their hands.
People are constantly adjusting them thus hands on face again. Pulling them down to speak or only having the mask covering their mouth but not their nose.
It's driving my ever increasing OCD nuts
So have I missed a new law now? Does a mask have to be worn in all shops as I hardly saw any in Sainsbury's last night. In fact there were no queues and all normal inside, first time since March.

When your positive sample count is only 6 (!!!!) then that's a very very small number to be making statistical measurement from. https://www.ons.gov.uk/file?uri=%2fpeoplepopulatio...
I've spent this morning trying to plan a day out, and have been amazed at the number of attractions and museums still not open. Those which are open need booking in advance, locking you into a time slot, and then have 'social distancing' and one way systems. Any interactive parts are still closed, even if the rest of the museum is open. Its a total disaster for the attractions because they have full costs of being open, but with far fewer visitors, while those which are closed have no income whatsoever.
The government really need to sort out the messaging and tell people the truth about the risks, otherwise we are going to end up in a cultural and economic wasteland.

My wife was very pleased to find a lilac facemask, with butterflies pictured on it, on etsy People stuffing them in pockets after leaving a shop only to fiddle with the damn thing in order to put it on again.

So people are adjusting to the craziness. Personally I would be reluctant to step into any shop that required me to wear a facemask

Uh oh. Southern Ireland have fallen for the bait now.

The irony is, Boris hates masks and is pressured into doing this because of the balance of scientific opinion is shifting too much to ignore. And yet everyone is saying it's a political decision.
I'm wondering, what decision if any has been made re this pandemic that isn't political. Can you name a single decision that was informed primarily by science?

Coming up the escalator at Tottenham Court Road tube yesterday, a bloke shouted over and gave me a thumbs up over my tabby cat mask. Which was nice. Really dislike the notion of them, but it's sod's law I'd get caught and a £1000 fine if I didn't wear one on the tube.

The scientific opinion has not shifted at all. Not even slightly.I'm wondering, what decision if any has been made re this pandemic that isn't political. Can you name a single decision that was informed primarily by science?
There is a small benefit if masks are made of the right materials and worn correctly. Most will not be.
That’s the full extent of the scientific consensus. Nothing more has been learned.
People like you are calling for this because it happened in other countries and you don’t like the idea that we are missing out on something that would help you ‘feel’ safe. It’s emotional.
It’s interesting how people who favoured lockdown now favour compulsory mask wearing.
The two are not automatically correlated and the calls for masks are quite recent. They only really appeared after it became clear that relaxing lockdown was not going to cause a massive second wave.
I think it shows a lack of critical thinking and a dependent mindset. People who think the world revolves around them and that others need to be made to do things to protect them.
I don’t think the support for masks is anywhere near as strong as the support for early lockdown. If these people really believed in them, then they would be wearing them already and, if anything, it seems to be reducing where I live.

Yes I saw a few masks around a couple of months ago and havent seen any for a while. The two are not automatically correlated and the calls for masks are quite recent. They only really appeared after it became clear that relaxing lockdown was not going to cause a massive second wave.

My wife is required to wear hers at work, when walking around the office, and so that is the only scenario locally where masks are often being worn.

I genuinely think that tipping point has been reached...its fked...completely fked hence the drive to get everyone back in the office ASAP and spend your money.Elysium said:

Probably mentioned this before, but before we started working from home around mud-March I'd prbably come into contact with several thousand people on my commute into the City each morning. At that point I'd count no more than a handful of mask wearers. Now with it on the decrease in London over the last couple of months, it's about 50/50 out and about in the streets. And with the wearing of them wanting to be extended, it adds to the confusion.
Absolutely zero masks in the pub garden last Saturday though.

I hope you understand why I think your 'moral' objection to masks is the more emotional response. There is a small benefit if masks are made of the right materials and worn correctly. Most will not be.

You are just parroting Trump now as far as I can tell. Who I note, hasn't spoke with Dr Fauci for 5 weeks since he started pushing masks hard.
So I will have to wear a mask or face covering for the first time today to view a house (this is in wales) but have viewed 3 this week with the smaller estate agents who are not putting a demand on wearing them.
Very few people I know have worn one even through the early part of the lockdown when it was at its peak. Yet all of a sudden we need people to wear them.
But if it makes people feel safe to get the economy back on track and open up things then let the people who don't feel safe wear them but they should not be mandatory.
Hopefully all this nonsense will pass and people will slip back into their old lives.
