Why does anyone think that something like that is a reasonable risk to run given the fact that you aren't going to make a lot of money but when you're caught (and you will be) you will probably do a couple of decades inside?
I suppose we only hear about the ones who get caught...
I suppose so, yes. Realistically speaking though how many of these people actually manage to navigate through that sort of very high level of risk into a comfortable retirement with enough in the bank to see them though? Very, very, very few would be my guess. Yes, we hear about those who are caught, and the papers are hardly going to be doing stories on the ones who've retired on their loot but how many anecdotal stories do you hear about you know who or the old geezer in the big house on the corner - he was a big time drug dealer, you know, and imported tons of Charlie and Smack. who have actually done stuff like that and survived it with a few quid and no long stretch as a guest of Liz? Apart from the odd very wealthy big cheese who has a palace in Marbella how often do you hear of the lower orders like the guys in TFHIPC getting though to comfortable retirement? Never, essentially.

yes Not only that, often the one that gets caught was known around town to have been doing it for years.

A read in the paper about a weed dealer who got busted, he was known to have been doing it for decades.

It consistently baffles me as to why people actually do this st.
Really, is it that much of a mystery? Don't you remember Tbops brother?

The article says he was holed up in Dubai. Has he been extradited, or 'got away with it'?
I'm guessing he got away with it as he appears to still be active

Lots I think. Once you get to the levels slightly removed from street dealers the risks are much lower and the rewards higher. The UK drug market is estimated at about 10 billion quid a year. That's a good living for a lot of people.

The guy on TFHIPC was significantly removed from the level of street dealers yet was carrying a massively higher risk (and lost the bet) for a very modest reward when set against that risk. He was basically living the life of a driving instructor who had lots of holidays and a few more shiny things than most. He could have achieved that through being a legit driving instructor, working for cash and not declaring it.

How much is a driving lesson? Say it’s £20 and he does 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and doesn’t take a holiday - £41,600 a year.... I think you may underestimate how much cash some of these guys make if that’s the comparison you’re making.

Well, the point is that if the market's worth 10 billion and has huge profit margins there are rather a lot of people doing well that the police have no idea about. Even the monkeys on 24hr in police custody probably would still be doing it if hadn't been for the Encro chat hack.
