Since the start of lockdown, there seems to be a sub-text for many, that condemns all businesses that have stayed open as heartless, capitalist bds.

The truth is much different. Aside from the very brave souls in the NHS, many of whom are literally on the front line every day, countless staff in vital sectors of retail - shops, petrol stations etc. - have braved the risks, every day.

Behind the scenes, workers in all sorts of diverse businesses and industries have continued to work, albeit with some changes in practices, throughout. Many of these people have either provided vital support to necessary industries, but even those who do not, directly, have saved the nation an unnecessary furlough debt.

I note, BTW, that Barrat Homes are now repaying their furlough payments.

I wonder how many others will....

I'm in construction. We do posh private bespoke houses, so not exactly 'essential' - we remained open throughout lockdown.
During the first couple of weeks, the government were actively encouraging building firms to stay open - I wonder why? Could it be that builders are generally a tough bunch with low risk to death by CV19???

I do know a lot of people, mainly other freelancers who are regularly on FB, WhatsApp etc.

That's 100s of people. I know one woman who probably had it, not tested, was poorly for a couple of weeks, and a friend's teenage son, also not tested, pretty much bed bound for a week. Both are fine now as are Boris, Matt, Cummings and Tom Hanks.

A few of the Facebook posters are rabidly defending lockdown and say we will all die if we leave the house, so I reckon they'd be the first to post if a friend's auntie's brother-in-law's wife's father's mate had had it.

Silence......

I'm not disputing that it's out there but it just seems to thankfully be less prevalent then the press would like us to believe.

We get bad flu seasons but are we inundated with information about friends and work colleagues coming down with it.

The numbers are scary when in black and white but then there are over 60 million people in this country, so percentage wise it's very low and I bet a lot lower than the other deaths caused by Lockdown. Cancer, Heart Attacks, Suicide to name but a few.

My ex wife's cancer check ups have stopped as well as my heart check ups after having a heart attack a few years ago.

In addition to 45K deaths with or of C19, did I read that there were likely to be 35K additional deaths due to cancer?

It nearly killed me, due to the stress. My short time in hospital due to a heart attack was marred, by watching the less senior staff, not really understanding the concept of cross contamination. I watched a carer, with mask and rubber gloves, pick up a plastic beaker with her fingers on the rim, then 20 seconds later pass a new plastic beaker to the bloke in the bed next to that one, whilst holding the rim with the same fingers as she had already been holding. You take the risk going into hospital really.
Have to say that the more senior the staff the more careful they were which suggests training is an issue.

We know four people that have had it. Two were uni age, one middle aged, and one old. The older person died.

I do agree we are 'flakes compared to say 50 years ago. Tthe 0.1% mortatlity rate is low'ish compared to previous novel outbreaks. Difference is that we live in a media/hype-driven soiety where everything is turned up to 11 and it tends to brings out the worse in people.

I'm puzzled by these stories.
me too since he didnt die of covid, and his cause of death was high blood pressure likely brought on by not looking after himself properly.

I dont think anything else really has an relevance.

Also ive been working through out, ive been run off my feet since i design space and retail equipment..
Agreed. He died from hypertension not Covid, the article even says that. What he earned, or where he worked has nothing to do with his death.

The story is just click bait for left wingers.

Unskilled migrant moves to one of the most expensive places in the world to live (London), can't make ends meet on SSP (he'd get F-all in many other countries, including his own). Dies of heart attack (Not Covid19).

I don't really understand how this story can make you ashamed of the country? Had this person arrived at a hospital with these symptoms, would he have got free treatment on the NHS, despite having paid nothing but the bare minimum into the system since arriving in 2018? The answer is absolutely yes, he may even still be alive today if he had.

People die of heart attacks every day. It's tragic. But this case is no different and no more tragic than all those others. The undertone seems to be to try to throw the employer (OCS, not MoJ like the article tries to suggest) under the bus for insisting workers came in to work.

Madness that this is even a topic for conversation.

"At Walthamstow Coroner’s Court Gomes’s death was officially recorded as hypertension of the heart."

No idea why Covid is being mentioned by the paper.
