But the vaccine will NOT go through the normal long term testing. It cant. We cant wait that long.
Evidence for that statement? The Oxford vaccine has already passed its phase 1&2 trials. Further trials are underway in places like Brazil. What do you think is missing?monkfish1 said:

Normally the process of approval is very effective. Except that we will shortcut the long term testing bit. So the normal standards will NOT be applied. This is when things go wrong.
What shortcuts do you think the Oxford vaccine testing have made? In fact since it is based on an earlier well tested delivery mechanism (adenovirus I think) all it is doing is teaching your immune system to recognise a particular feature of CV19 (the corona spike). This is not a drug, its a safe but as yet unproven vaccine. (unproven that it would confer significant resistance)Im not concerned about if its effective. You say "its safe". Says who, by what measure?
How can you know its safe long term with no long term testing? Im not being an arse, thats a genuine question.
Sure, i get that there will be modelling, comparisons to similiar vaccines, risk anaylsis etc etc. But its still not a long term test.

You've got to shove the decimal point quite a few places that way > until he's wrong
The last number I saw you have a 1 in 67,000 chance of dying from Covid if you're under 45.
But you're not under 45The last number I saw you have a 1 in 67,000 chance of dying from Covid if you're under 45.

I won’t be having it.
But then I’m in an age group that barely needs to worry about it.
I’m young’ish fit and healthy.
So you don't care about catching it and passing it on with possibly fatal consequences? But then I’m in an age group that barely needs to worry about it.
I’m young’ish fit and healthy.
Great.
What an altruistic bunch PH'ers are.
I won't be having it either.

So after tens of thousands of people from all over the world have been vaccinated and many medical bodies from all over the world (including a 30,000 strong trial in USA) have found it safe and effective. You wouldnt take it?I won't be having it either.

Other than my immediate family my interaction with people at present is minimal, the case rate where I live is tiny, no one has died with COVID here for a few weeks according to the latest regional data.
The chances of me catching it are minuscule, let alone then being in a scenario where I can pass it to someone vulnerable, who should be taking their own precautions anyway.
I don’t have the flu vaccine either, should we all get that now? Anyone could pass the flu on to someone who is vulnerable to die from it.
That is my position at present, it may be subject to change, it may not.

The choice in question being "Which buttock do you want it in?"

How do you know? For all you know you have it now, but are asymptomatic. That is my position at present, it may be subject to change, it may not.

I suspect many of them are more than happy to take extra precautions given they know the situation. It would be utterly foolish of them if they didn't.
So, given that it’s unlikely COVID will go away by itself, you think that a tranche of society should continue to live (indeed, you seem to think will be happy to live) a sheltered existence - in some cases for their whole lives - in order for a minority of individuals to implicitly opt out of their social contract because they simply don’t want to be vaccinated for no logical reason?Vanden Saab said:

I've not signed a social contract, are you going to trust me to look after your welfare or will you look after it for yourself?
Isn't that a bit like passing some bloke stood holding a flat mobile, in the pouring rain, on a remote country road, in the dark, next to his broken down TVR and saying "should have got a Toyota"? I've not signed a social contract, are you going to trust me to look after your welfare or will you look after it for yourself?

That is a particular brand of special.
