So thinking of binning the Z4M - its a Grey Coupe with CSLs (although not actually checked if they are reps or genuine).

Its in good nick but on circa 69k which is annoytying now.

It looks like values are picking up a wee bit

But I am wondering what peoples thoughts are on the next few years

Plan is to either sell now, probably for a small loss, or keep the car for the next 2-3+ years.

IF I keep it I would make it more of a daily and just enjoy it. My commute is only 8-15 miles a day but I want to use it if I keep it

I am just worried if I sell now they will all end up worth £35/40k+ in a few years time and ill be kicking myself - but equally I cant see that happening

IMHO,

With that mileage, if you love it then get on and use it. Yes, it’ll perhaps lose a little but a lot less than most other cars you could replace it with.

If you’re not enjoying it, sell it, congratulate yourself on the minimal depreciation and spend the money on something you will.

I think your car is a great hedge against losing money, but the ones that’ll keep heading up will be the low mileage garage queens as there’s still plenty to choose from.

I bought one in 2010 with 11K miles for £21K and sold it two years later with an extra 10K on the clock for the same amount. The owner contacted me last year and asked if I wanted to buy it back he was selling it for £22K and it had done another 40K. There is a similar one for sale in the classifieds for £23K so yes they are creeping up but they have not risen dramatically in 10 years but would almost be free motoring. Notwithstanding service costs and costs of consumables. There is a black on (on ebay I think) thats done 130K and is up for £13K. As long as its been maintained that would possibly be a better place for your money as you can enjoy the car without losing a ton of money.

If I was buying one now I'd look for one without the satnav as the dash looks a lot smarter without the useless pop up screen.

I'm not sure I'd be wanting to use it for such small daily commute.

I used mine for the 440 mile a week commute - 220 miles each way in one go - and weekend outings. Probably did 25000 miles a year in it for a while. It was often just sat at home or at the airport carpark when I was working abroad, and even then it'd get a good run-out at the weekend (200 miles or 1 tank run into Wales/Lakes/Dales/Peaks) or on the way home from the airport (about 35 miles).

Don't think it ever did less than 10 miles in one trip, and that was only to take it for a service or to get a puncture repair. For shorter distances I'd use a cheap 2nd car when public transport wasn't an option.

It really depends on many factors, but mostly how much you enjoy it!

I bought my Silver Grey M Coupe on CSL replicas in December for what seemed like a very good price as the seller didn't advertise it until 15 December, but needed it gone before Christmas! It has done 76K but for a 13 year old car that's hardly leggy.

But thanks to events since then I've hardly done 1,200 miles in it yet as I no longer commute. rolleyes

For a short commute like that I think I might be frustrated only just getting it up to temperature for some high-revving magic as I arrived at my destination! At least when I use mine (it's a 2nd car) it is always for a longer trip so can be driven as intended for a while!

Prices do seem to have gone up a bit since I got it and will probably increase at some point - look at Z3MC prices now - but who knows when.

I'm still in that honeymoon phase so am bound to see things differently, but if you enjoy it, can afford it and don't lust after something else why not keep it?

Even if values don't increase they seem unlikely to drop significantly.

Solid car to have some money in, mine has just ticked past 70k and is used as a second car does around 2k a year. I don’t think these will really see much of a rise for another 4-5 years mainly due to this Covid 19 pandemic. A lot of these cars are finding themselves with owners who know their is nothing currently on sale that is like the z4m and tend to become long term owners. This is good for values. Tidy examples will hold value well, maybe in 5 years they will a bit of a collectors car and prices will rise how ever I don’t think they will hit z3m prices for a while yet.
Goods cars but are getting to an age where big jobs will need doing, vanos, rod bearings, suspension is 2.5k investment. As with all cars of this type history and condition will be key in getting a good price.

No, I can't see values even approaching Z3M values for a long time - although I'm not sure why as they look much better, to me anyway!

What does surprise me is how there always seem to be so many for sale at any one time considering only about 600 ever got registered in the UK! Although that may explain why I'm the 8th keeper of mine. laugh

But they are getting towards significant potential refresh costs now. I just got an Inspection 2 and a few other jobs done on mine by a BMW Indy and had a 4 figure bill - but I knew that when I bought it. Now I'm just waiting nervously for the result of the analysis of the oil sample!

I think we’re still awaiting that ”youtube-moment” when Harry Metcalfe, Chris Harris or some other heavyweight puts the Z4M under the spotlight, partly because its so rare hardly anyone knows about it.
Then there are 3 generations of Z4 to add to the confusion, there was only one Z3.

The Z3M Coupe was more common and also made a bigger impact partly because of its bonkers look.

I had my Z4MC before all classic car prices went bananas, I might have made a couple of quid on it had I kept it but barely enough to even cover basic servicing.

If you like the car, keep it. I would not advise keeping any car as an investment, and I just don't see Z4Ms being this suddenly desirable car.

No I don't see a Z4M as an investment either, especially given the maintenance costs if they are serviced as they should be.

I had a couple of 3.0Si Z4 Coupes for 5+ years and loved them. They held their value pretty well too and were much cheaper to run.

But in view of that when I saw my MC advertised for a good price it was pretty inevitable I would buy it!

And although I haven't used it as much as I might have without lockdown, I'm still glad I did. If it goes up in value that would be great, if it stays about the same I'd be very happy and in the unlikely event it tanked I'd still just be glad I'd had one.

I've always found my regrets in life are about things I didn't do rather than things I did!
