Embankment washed away? When one derails then the others just ride over the top.

Hopefully a very empty train due to Covid & other stuff?
Hopefully so

From news reports some have been at 10% capacity or so, so yes hopefully the casualties will be much less than they would otherwise have been,

Crikey, they don't look to be very close to the crash site either, I bet access down there is a bloody struggle.
I live in Aberdeen and use the train south semi frequently and I'd imagine that emergency access would be very challenging - it's a fair way off from the road and down a fairly severe embankment, and there isn't a lot of room down there.

Sad news, hopefully all are OK.

I hope I'm wrong, but the second picture that was removed appeared to show one of the power cars with the drivers cab detached and fuel tanks ablaze.

Read elsewhere that a bridge may have collapsed beneath the front power car just as it was returning wrong line back towards Aberdeen.

Edit : correction, the train had already crossed over to the right line and was heading back when the derailment occured.

It looks like the cab has been ripped off.
Not good.

It certainly looked that way, the front appeared to be severely damaged due to an impact and/or firefrown

PA reporting only 12 people onboard.

Not good news if you are one of those 12 but a hell of alot better than it could have been.

My mate’s brother in law is a train driver and has heard driver and conductor are dead. Very sad if actually true.

Dreadful.

Yes, lots of damage from rain in England last night - A68 washed away for example - but what those south of the border perhaps don't realise is that parts of Scotland have been hammered with rain for last few weeks.

It's in local news that one carriage is submerged too. Looks horrific, but seems to be with general quarantine, and Aberdeen lockdown in particular then it is a lot quieter than it should have been thankfully. Lived a lot of my life in Aberdeen, so done that journey many times. Thoughts with the people on the train and their families.

Sky reporting driver has died. Possibly caused by a landslide.

Was there work going on near or on the tracks at the time?

Seen a report saying emergency services were being assisted by rail workers who were nearby at the time.

Maybe assessing or dealing with the land slip?

Heard on the radio that the train left Aberdeen at 6/30 - If thats the case it is surprising because that was the height of the storm and the rain was biblical. It got stopped by landslide and then couldn't get back because of another. So fortunate it was not busier.

First air ambulance has arrived at Aberdeen Royal informary.

May have been attending to reports that signal equipment was faulty,

According to the National Rail log there were apparently only six passengers + crew onboard.

What a horrible, distressing thought. What on earth could you do in that situation? Would there be much time? Would any lights be on?

Sends a shiver up my spine. Poor souls.
