I said something on one of the other threads, but quite frankly the govt need to put SAGE back in their box. They are scientific advisors and should not be dangling the carrot of Christmas to further their agenda and undermine the govt.

Real leadership would slap them back down.
Oh cmon Boris is just desperate not to do an Alan Rickman as the sheriff of Nottingham and be known as the person who cancelled Christmas. He's clearly going to be very very keen on doing whatever it takes to avoid..... No doubt just checking with focus groups first to be sure...
Sure. That’s all fine. Agreed.

My problem is SAGE using that to exert pressure on them via the media. It moves them from being govt advisors to being a lobby group that undermines the govt itself.

Dangling the carrot of Christmas as a reward for a national lockdown is political manipulation and nothing to do with “scientific advice”.

They’re speaking out of turn (without considering other aspects of the nation such as the economy) and it’s not the first time.

Yup, news of the national lockdown next week is front page on the Daily Wail, scientific advisers from Sage told Boris it was the only way to save Christmas - not good at all!

Would be terrible irony on this government's competence to move every part of the country into "tier 4" when many places haven't yet graduated to tier 3.

the thing that concerns me is only essential businesses can stay open.

Just checking the Euro excess deaths site, we really are in the peak of the second wave.......

Yep, expect a lot of people to google the new "furlough" rules.

Apparently Sage scientists backed by Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Michael Gove said the virus was on track to kill 85,000 this winter, and that it was too late for a so-called 'circuit break'.

That's all we need, Hancock and Gove hand in hand, I mean Hancock may be a clueless idiot but Gove is a manipulative little toad and how he managed to stay in office after stabbing Boris in the back a few years ago beggars belief. I appreciate that most MPs are indeed slimy two faced rats but he really does scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Call me somewhat cynical but if Mike Yeadon is correct and the numbers will fall anyway as Covid-19 runs out of hosts to infect, then perhaps they already know this, and are introducing the national lockdown now so they take the credit for 'saving us all'.

I think I posted this last week, now I'm the last person that would call a conspiracy theory but I cant help but re-visit this little gem.

For those of you who are as sceptical as me, feel free to strike though or tick off the list one by one as they happen.

Edit : Thought I would add this little coundown clock. If anyone from the government utters the words "Covid 21" when this reaches zero then its a pretty safe bet that its game over.

That absolutely is what will happen. That's how the history books will be written, that lockdown "saved us".

hold on - no one from sage was directly quoted in the daily mail article. It's simply the SPI-M meetings notes that were released today that the government that was being talked up by the mail that sage was beating the drum for lockdown. which they are but not through the media. the christmas thing is not in the SPI-M paper but the mail quoting 'senior SAGE sources said it was still 'not too late to save Christmas''.... which may or may not actually have been anything from anyone from them directly knowing the mail.

Why are people posting blatantly made up news stories as real, from very dubious sources. Clue is they always sound very close to a real paper.

Shouldn't we have long run out of hosts to infect as transmission has been running at roughly the same rate for weeks already and according to Yeadon we were all mostly non susceptible already?

Good point, I guess we will have to wait till next week to see if anything happens.

I would love to agree, it sounded ludicrous when the story broke and I still think it is, the trouble is though the points raised in it are happening one by one as if its an instructional manual.

local lockdowns, nightingale hospitals reopened, national lockdowns, what happens when covid 21 makes an appearance?

Not really a breaking news story though when literally anyone could have written a “secretly leaked” email and posted on a random conspiracy nut website.

I'm pretty sure he didn't say that, here's the podcast on Youtube:

Approximate figs

We’ve had 20,000 a day who’ve caught it ( minimum) every day for a few weeks.

We’ve had 100 odd who’ve died of it (with it) every day for a few weeks.

Shouldn’t the news be announcing that 19,900 people are recovering from Covid EVERY DAY!

It’s great news!
