That may well be true when using a brand new mask just the once and disposing of it, but most people I see reuse an old mask several times to save money, and why shouldn't they.

Makes me wonder if 'Value Added Tax' is charged on mask sales, a £1 a day mask tax, just a more modern take on the window tax or plastic bag tax?

Anyway, with regard to the mould, is easy enough to test out, wear one for a few days in the rain, then leave it somewhere cold and damp and watch what happens, could probably grow a few potatoes in them wink

Or do as tonker suggested, find a cold corner of your house. Add heat on the inside. See what happens in that corner.

Anyone here a keen runner?

Could they do their normal 5K in a mask and tell us how it goes?

Re:masks I’m getting kinda sick of having to dispose of discarded ones on my drive. On a busy london road (south circular) and lots of discarded rubbish from the street gets blown in. The masks are the most depressing item to see. I’ve even seen them discarded on countryside walks in the hills and forests. The least people could do is put them in a fking bin.

I’ve seen (older) people out in the countryside running / jogging in them (alone). Honestly I don’t get some people. The settings in which I’ve seen it they could easily stay 5m+ away from anyone, and they’re running past people. Ridiculous.

I've found if you pick them up and turn them inside out you can wear them for a few more days biggrin

I’ve had the same mask in my pocket since the first day they were mandated, was it July?

Don’t use it very often but I bet it’s carrying a lot worse than Covid!

I run. Probably 4 times a week.

I also have heart disease.

I get angina from wearing a mask in Lidl. I'm not going to try a 5k in it.

Seriously? Why does it bother you so much to even notice, if they want to do it outside of where they have to wear them just let them get on with it, same as you would any other piece of clothing or protective gear.

I have nothing against them doing it. I’d be a pretty shoddy libertarian if I did.

What worries me is how they can be so badly informed that they think it’s of any benefit to them or anyone else to do so.

There’s not even any “guidance” that they should be.

Good points markyb_lcy, is similar to watching them wearing the mask in the car - why do they do it?

Would you think the same if you were walking around the streets in Asia? I honestly think you would do yourself some good to stop concerning yourself about this stuff and concentrate on navigating our way through what is happening rather than arguing against it.

Your mental health must be shot to bits from getting so upset about it all.

I wasn’t walking around street in Asia, I was in the Surrey Hills in the great unpopulated outdoors.

Mental health isn’t the best it’s been, but it isn’t the worst it’s been either. I’m managing. Thanks for your concern though.

Put them in the tumble dryer.

Doing that also helps to shrink them a bit so they fit properly.

So they don't hold 'germs'.

Would anyone share a mask with any random person then?

It should have been obvious I was being hugely facetious and silly smile

I’ve borrowed a (recently used) mask off my missus. Even that felt a bit “wrong”.

Yes strikes me as someone with a commitment to mask wearing using their qualification to deliberately mislead the public. The WHO recommends removing a fabric mask once it becomes moist with your breath and to not reuse single use masks.

and what are many people doing?. They are reusing single issue masks and continually putting on fabric masks, getting them moist, and then putting the back in their pocket to use in the future. Perfect breeding conditions for bacteria and mould.

What he is saying might well be true. If single use masks were only being worn once and fabric reusable ones were being washed after each use, but that is not what is happening in practice.
