They come up with meaningless quotes 'busier than', 'more cases than in the spring', 'near capacity', without ever quantifying it.

I want to see tomorrow's dashboard update - because the recent updates across the whole of the UK don't reflect what the talking heads on TV are saying.

Staff are afraid to speak against the government narrative and those outside the NHS who question the facts are silenced via OFCOM regulations.
Indeed. There seems to be a lot of this.

I’m not sure you can really classify it as lying. The individuals concerned have entered the profession to help people and are clearly concerned about people dying. They are also working hard in difficult position and so are, rightly, emotional.

However, in terms of the bigger picture, calmer heads need to prevail.

In reality these scenarios occur every winter, some years worse than others.

I also think that some people in the health service think that now is a good time to illustrate how more investment is needed. I don’t agree with that narrative, but it does seem to be driving the press to call for further funding.

Full time lecturer *and* active paramedic.

It's a wonder he has time to appear on Sky news.

Of course, he has links to Imperial, too.

Now, I'm not claiming he's part of a conspiracy, but that's one hell of a set of coincidences.

ETA: I do particularly love the bit in the interview where he doesn't appear to know what his job is. Oh what a tangled web.

Where does it say he's a full-time lecturer?

Just going back to earlier posts re: Welsh Regulations. Not entirely convinced this applies in 'law' - happy to be corrected.

Turns out he is an active paramedic, but the lie remains.

But yeah, trust the internet nutters like yourself. No thanks.

Our 10 month old is a bit rough atm, very unhappy and just won't settle. Started yesterday morning but by last night the mrs decided it was time to call out of hours to try and have him seen. We think (and we're not doctors) that he might have a water infection.

My mrs called the out of hours GP about 1am this morning, they said he needs a Covid test straight off the bat. This is a child with no cough and no temperature - not sure about a loss of taste or smell because, well... he's 10 months old. The out of hours GP said they would not see him without a negative Covid test. Which is quite difficult to obtain at 1am.

Anyway, I was forthright and insisted he was seen. The doctor called back and explained in broken English we need to bring in some piss for them to test. She said to sit him on our knee and catch some piss in a cup for them to dip when we went in.

She said don't come in immediately, come in later on when we're less busy. So the mrs and I set about trying to make a 10 month old piss into a cup on demand at just after 1 in the morning.

Three hours and no piss later, she gets another call at 4am saying don't worry about collecting his piss in a cup. The doctor is now feeling poorly so is clocking off early. You'll have to call your regular GP tomorrow and try to get an appointment.

We now have a Covid test booked for a child with no symptoms of Covid, and cannot get through to our surgery to get him seen by a doctor today.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but the NHS in Wales needs razing and starting again imo. I wish these people were held criminally accountable for their laziness and unwillingness to do their fking jobs. We have never had anything other than disgraceful service from the NHS in Wales when we've needed it.

If you want to test their sense of taste, give them a dab of something bitter and a dab of something sweet.
Suggest strawberry ice cream for something sweet. Choose something bitter yourself. But only a dab in the finger.

Their reaction will tell you if they have taste sensation. Expect smiles/grimaces.....

Sorry to hear your child is ill and hope they get better soon.

My wife worked in the NHS for many years and now teaches healthcare. We relocated to Wales about 5 years ago and from what I have seen and heard the main reason that the NHS doesn't work in Wales is the attitudes of the residents to any attempt to try and reform and fix it.

I know this will be controversial but just about every healthcare professional that has moved to Wales who I have spoken to has said the same without any prompting. The same opinion from several levels, from recently retired Professors to nurses in training.

Thank you.

Out of interest, what attitudes prevent it from being reformed? How are people pushing back? (I’m not being obnoxious, genuinely interested)

I moved to Wales about 12 years ago and it has always been pretty poor. Since having kids and needing to use the hospital and GP surgery, I’ve realised just how bad it is.

Took a nice drive to the beach yesterday with a sand wedge and a bag of golf balls.

Spent an enjoyable hour practicing my bunker play on the beach, which, ironically was right next to the golf course.

I must have been lucky. We moved here about 8 years ago, and I have found the exact opposite. Our local NHS services are much, much better than the ones I experienced in England. Our GP surgery in particular is fantastic (all staff, receptionists, nurses and doctors).

The only exception is dental care. I can't get an NHS dentist - but that's not unique to Wales.

That's good to hear. I think I'm in a particularly bad part of Wales for healthcare, with Betsi Cadwaladr being the worst of the very worst.

My local GP surgery had 6-7 GPs when I moved here. Now we're down to just the one. I've seen him on the wine aisle in Asda more times than I have managed to secure an appointment with him (I'm not even being facetious). I've given up trying to get an appointment with him, and use a video GP instead that I have access to through work. Any referrals or face to face appointments I would have to travel to Manchester for.

Same here with the dentist situation. I actually had an NHS dentist in Wales but every routine appointment I booked was cancelled for 2 years, so I went private instead. Not worth the hassle for 15 quid a month or so that it costs for a private dentist imo.

After lots of fking about the mrs managed to get an appointment with a nurse at the surgery. They looked him over and they think he has an infection on his willy. They've prescribed medication appropriately and hopefully, we might get some sleep tonight.

I had to sack off a 12 hour shift in work, on the say so of some fking mouthbreather doctor who insisted we get a Covid test for a child who was displaying absolutely no symptoms of Covid in the first place.

Not sure if we're supposed to wait around for the result of the Covid test he didn't need to take, before going out to do the weekly shop, or before I can go back to work tomorrow.

I for one won't be clapping for the NHS, that's for sure. Knowing my luck, his test will come back positive too.

It appears some hospitals are under big pressure.

Usual caveats with social media - however a quick trawl on their profiles satisfies me enough to post these / share:

https://twitter.com/caerau10/status/13443732151168... "Missus just in from her shift, one patient in A and E 46 hours waiting for a bed, patients on an ambulance outside for 19 hours as no capacity. Regular patients, winter + Covid have them at breaking point. It’s crazy because Facebook told me they are empty and the staff are lying"

https://twitter.com/WelshGasDoc/status/13445362723... 100% legit ongoing source "Tonight has been absolutely the worst on-call I’ve done as a Consultant since the last one."

https://twitter.com/sianharries_/status/1344405192... "Just had a message from a mate who’s a Dr in Bridgend saying the hospital is rammed - and there are 40 year olds in ITU with Covid. He’s begging people to wear masks and not mix" reply "
I’m in Bridgend and have friends working at the hospital who say the same. So many deniers about though, it’s incredibly frustrating. Imagine working your arse off in a hospital then being accused of lying and making up a ‘scamdemic’, it’s disgusting"

https://twitter.com/leessii/status/134441510965814... "We’re working with the patients and staff at the field hospital in Bridgend, and they are full too. So devastating for everyone. One bright light is seeing nurses, health care professionals etc I know getting the vaccine. 2 today got it today. Hoping people stay at home tomorrow"

https://twitter.com/FreyaSykes/status/134446129623... "A friend died in POW on Monday.
Another died in the first wave. Both in their 40s
Family members have it and I've got 3 friends who've been in ICU with it this time round too.
It's rampant in Bridgend yet people are being dheads about it still."

https://twitter.com/Jonnie_R/status/13444147870532... "I saw that on the local news.

I've had arguments with people on the Aberdare Facebook group who won't accept reality, and one even asked how we knew the PHW figures were real Face with rolling eyes

My mate's wife in Aberdare spent 4 weeks in ITU and faces a year of recovery.

None so blind etc."

https://twitter.com/lillybelle79/status/1344422810... "I work in Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board too. I do therapy with the some of the people who leave ITU and a lot of the families who have lost someone. The list is growing daily and it’s so hard.
"

And for north, Wrexham ITU nurse account: https://twitter.com/itunurseswxm/status/1344605264... "The wearing of PPE hasn’t got easier, speaking to devastated families hasn’t got easier, reassuring a scared patient with COVID hadn’t got easier, we are working long hours as hard as we can to look after you and your families, we don’t want thanks. Just Stay at home😢please."

Of course everywhere has its problems but is that the best you can find? The first relates to a serial killer active 25 years ago and the second from 2019? Yes, North Wales clearly has its problems but I'll warrant that it's still a safer place to live than most other areas in the UK.

Does anyone here have any mates high up in the welsh government who may know when the golf courses are due to re-open?
