The problem is that most religions have adapted and evolved. The Koran is taken as verbatim, so can never be changed to modern views. We have changed a lot in 1400 years as a society, so clearly there is a conflict there.

I think the offer of something after death does seem to be the main selling point, as far as I can see. tales of winged horse flights and crossing the sea on foot are entertaining, but kind of irrelevant to the man in the street.

There’s a difference between ‘debate’ and outright racism. Just as there’s a big difference between ‘do’ and ‘may’. There is certainly scope for debate, yes, but debate doesn’t work when people use definitives.

Agreed. The burning of heretics was nothing to be proud of. But the western religons left that stuff in the middle ages. What happened in Paris wasn't history it was news.

If not murder, there are still atrocities occurring under the protection of Christianity, though. Sexual crimes, for example. I escaped at boarding school, but I know others who did not.

As another example, the methodists aren't hugely militant despite being monotheistic.
