I've got four kids and a certain, but difficult to mpute, number of grandchildren. I vote in GEs, and especially brexit, for what would be best for them, and so for me. However, I view that as similar, probably identical, to voting selfishly. The fact that I believe what is best for me and mine is best for the country is not a consideration.
I have been sitting here for an hour, during which time I have composed - and then abandoned - two posts on this. I really have problems with this issue. So I decided to read what the philosophers make of it all, did some googling and came up with this interesting discussion on a site I think I might be going back to again.

https://philosophy.stackexchange.com/questions/377...
An interesting, but unanswerable question. Lots of people quoting others. Why do people do that?

I am one of the masses. I am not rich, although I pay, or at least paid before lockdown, a goodly amount of tax. I have a pension and a couple of means of generating income. I work not because I have to but because I want to. Like most people, I suppose, I think I’m rather normal in my aspirations: fair day’s pay etc, social help and people being free to do what they want as long as they don’t scare the horses. What’s good for me is generally good for a sizeable proportion of the country. I don’t think GDP is the be-all. Safety, security and opportunity are more important. However . . .

I was brought up with the belief that family comes first. The fact that what’s good for me is good for the majority is a happy happenstance, but no more than that. I have a big investment in the future, and that’s in the forefront of my mind when I make decisions. There’s no two ways about it; it’s selfish. It’s also both ingrained and, I think, understandable.

I had an uncle who fought in the International Brigade. A hero of mine. His actions were the subject of what my family, rather large in number, considered to be a discussion but many might describe as an argument. The general conclusion was that the IB did nothing other than get people killed who would probably have lived if he and others hadn’t stuck their noses into what was none of their business. My uncle remained my hero – he took risks with his life for others and, despite being bombed and threatened with having his citizenship removed, carried on doing what he thought was right. But I also believe that you should consider all consequences of actions, even if you think them right and, as my uncle said, an obligation.

My gran, a powerhouse, and the matriarch of a family of 18 kids before various wars, said that the Spanish should fight their own fight.

How many voters thought of the needs, desires and happiness of others when voting in various GEs? It does not make their actions wrong as I don’t think they should fight someone else’s battles.

Careful...
That's completely the wrong type of people Trump has experience in grooming.
Well, one could read this account, the comedian Noel Casler, former Celebrity Apprentice staffer has accused Donald Trump of recreational drug use, plenty of accusations and details

Whitaker and Barr repeatedly tried to derail the SDNY criminal investigation of Halkbank—a Turkish bank thought to be laundering money to fund Iran’s nuclear weapons program—while Erdogan wooed Trump.

eoffrey S. Berman was outraged.

The top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, Mr. Berman had traveled to Washington in June 2019 to discuss a particularly delicate case with Attorney General William P. Barr and some of his top aides: a criminal investigation into Halkbank, a state-owned Turkish bank suspected of violating U.S. sanctions law by funneling billions of dollars of gold and cash to Iran.

For months, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey had been pressing President Trump to quash the investigation, which threatened not only the bank but potentially members of Mr. Erdogan’s family and political party. When Mr. Berman sat down with Mr. Barr, he was stunned to be presented with a settlement proposal that would give Mr. Erdogan a key concession.

Mr. Barr pressed Mr. Berman to allow the bank to avoid an indictment by paying a fine and acknowledging some wrongdoing. In addition, the Justice Department would agree to end investigations and criminal cases involving Turkish and bank officials who were allied with Mr. Erdogan and suspected of participating in the sanctions-busting scheme.

Mr. Berman didn’t buy it.

The bank had the right to try to negotiate a settlement. But his prosecutors were still investigating key individuals, including some with ties to Mr. Erdogan, and believed the scheme had helped finance Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

Amazing how many of trumps team were involved with turkey, turkish banks etc Manafort, guiliani and his team (Fruman Parnas etc)
Remember when "US President Donald Trump has told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Washington will lobby Nato members to provide Turkey with Patriot missile systems"
https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/us-trump-nato-p...

Remember Giuliani, trumps personal lawyer, pressed Tillerson for help to release gold trader client who flouted Iran sanctions
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/...

Remember all those links with the russian oligarchs that Parnas spilled the beans on
https://www.occrp.org/en/investigations/behind-tru...
Another country trump is compromised by over money, dodgy payments etc

Edit:
Matthew Miller
@matthewamiller
Barr demanding that SDNY ignore DOJ rules and let a corporate settlement absolve executives of personal liability is unreal. A US company that asked for this would get shouted out of the room, but when a foreign dictator who can help Trump's bottom line demands it, Barr jumps.

So Trump helps Turkey help Iran , who is America’s and Israel’s enemy? I thought republicans were friends of Israel ? Or is it all about money with republicans?

Yes this possibility occurred to me after I posted but I decided to leave it up as the odds in NPE are usually in favour of any given poster being as I initially said. Good job I didn't have £5K on that one.

Here's the video of John McCain, at a Republican rally, stating to the crowd that Obama was "A decent family man, a decent citizen" and that an Obama presidency was absolutely nothing to be worried about.

Absolutely incredible to watch that and see how far into the gutter US politics has gone under Trump.

John McCain was a thoroughly decent man, and the way Trump desecrated him was beyond disgraceful.

Wouldn't it be gleefully ironic if the administration challenged the result in the SC and the SC ruled against them.

It would be hilarious.

There's a better chance of me winning the euro millions quadruple double rollover though.

The fact that so many Americans still voted for a coward who never served, insulted military veterans and Gold star families and all the other bile he’s spewed over the last 10 years, says a lot about a big chunk of the American population.

He's made it OK to be an asshole.

His behaviours I have seen fairly regularly in a variety of people I've suspected of being assholes but always kept things civil. He's allowed people to step from behind the shadows and show their true colors.

Which brings us a full circle back to the point that was being made about people voting for Trump because he has brought them benefits. If you were an out of work coal miner or steel worker or whatever, and you believe that Trump has got you back into work again then you won't care that he is trashing everything else or dragging the USA through the gutter, you will just be pleased that he got you a job and you will likely vote for him again.
What makes people think Trump has their back? Clean coal bs will not fly and steel works will not come back. How stupid one has to be to believe those kind of promises. If some factory comes back from China it needs couple of security guards. Everything else is done by robots. Trump voters are dragging the USA through the gutter for no real gain at all apart from millionaires being richer than ever before.

It's not stupidity, it's desperation. There are millions of people in the rust belt living in towns decimated by the change in economy that has turned their towns into opium induced hell holes. Trump offered them hope compared to the Washington establishment, which didn't give a damn about their plight.

It's those people which will lose Trump the election if they judge he too has abandoned them.
