Glad to see Byker back.
I think this thread and it´s predecessors, created and contributed in a UK forum, is important to me,reading in Germany,
because it documents the rise, reign and fall of a US president who definitely changed the US climate of politics.
Born in West-Berlin just before the wall was built, I always had an ambivalent relationship to the US,
on one side they were the good guys liberating Europe from NS fascism ( with the allies ),
on the other side I had strong opposing thoughts about the way internal ( human rights, McCarthyism, Black Power, etc )
and external conflicts ( Banana Republics, Vietnam etc. ) were handled by various US governments.
Eventually I found that I was living about 80Km away from Ground Zero of the first nuclear response to a potential USSR attack,
and after WW3 my country maybe would be free, but quite molten to the ground.
I never saw "The Apprentice" on TV so Trump´s running for candidate was the first time I actually saw him,
and -like many others- thought he was a bad joke, a caricature of a politician.
Then I saw him gathering momentum within the party, wiping out his opponents in reps and dems,
and winning the election, with slogans, attitudes and actions I never thought possible....and a bit chav,
a word I learned in PH.
Then I was surprised how he continued to change the way US politics were made, and communicated,
by press conferences and twitter broadsides, and how "America First" became "Me and my family / buddies first" .
During his term, I still had some hope and confidence in the US parliament and legal system to put a brakeshoe in,
but this confidence dwindled more and more, with parliament blocked and legal personnel exchanged for his favour.
I thought "will he ever get away with this", and had doubts that Biden could win against him,
but it seems the majority of voters had doubts about Trump´s ability to handle problems and have a perspective.
Now that he is out of the White House, and out of presidential power & immunity,
I think the work of prosecutors is not only about "catching him" for his wrongdoings,
but this work is also building confidence in the US legal system where all people should be treated equal,
regardless of their financial power or "good friends in high places", even if this reads a bit idealistic.
I regard Trump as a historical figure, a "tipping point" ,
want to see if his way of lying, bullying and cheating will see him as a rehabilitated man in future, or as a convicted criminal, and hope for the latter.
I consider this important not only for US history, but also for other countries, where "little Trumps" have come to power,
or are trying to gain power by copying his "style", catching the masses of voters with cheap and dirty slogans
instead of describing problems and searching for perspectives into the future even if this is more complex and complicated.
That´s why this thread, with Byker´s and others´ contributions, is important to me,
it also is a "one-stop shop" for information not found in Germany.

It's not trump though is it, it's the RNC/McConnells fault. This started 4-5 years before under Obama, where the GOP hated his social forward thinking policies, trying to drag the US into the 21st century and create social policies similar to the rest of the developed world, but that didn't go down well with the rich, white folk who fund the GOP and their senators.I think this thread and it´s predecessors, created and contributed in a UK forum, is important to me,reading in Germany,

Cue McConnells tactic of blocking anything the Dems/Obama put forward, to undermine Obamas presidency and legacy. Obama has said he didn't see it coming for quite sometime, hadn't seen trump as a viable candidate. Yes he was upset/embarressed by the flaming he got from Obama at the 2011 white house correspondence lunch, which is why he started talking afterwards about running in 2012, but thats why we now know he was groomed/encouraged by the russians since 2013, which started as the Moscow Miss World.
trump was only selected as candidate because as a consummate conman, McConnell and the RNC could see him starting to gather the right wing voters as a base under him, ultimately which was their base as well. They knew all his faults, knew about how much he was compromised, but for the RNC it was all about getting back into power and staying their. Nothing else mattered and they've sold out the party and their members for that. The judges they pushed through, trying to change voting laws was all about that, even to the point of looking the other way as trump commit committed criminal acts, clearing him twice, hiding evidence, refusing to hear witnesses, obstructing investigations.
What they didn't realise I think was just how corrupt trump was and a little bit of corruption didn't matter because that was the swamp they moved in, it was accepted as the norm to take money from lobbiests/companys, super pacs, Money corrupts absolutely in US politics, and it reached it's obvious pinnacle with trump who was out to make every penny he possibly could for himself and didn't care about anything else - apart from his ratings.
So desperate were the GOP to stay in power was that they accepted and enabled trump. As a reward, trump has split the party. Everything he touches dies
and it continues
Senate Republicans have blocked debate on voting rights legislation. The For the People Act failed to advance on a party line vote, 50-50.
Of course they don't want everyone to vote, they'd be out of power for ages. Just look at Georgia now taking a further 100,000 from the voting database, which is why Stacey Adams is again energising people to register to vote again as the Republicans try to remove Dem voters.
These are direct quotes from people as seen in the media:
Schumer "Once again, the Senate Republican minority has launched a partisan blockade of a pressing issue here in the United States Senate. Voter suppression has become part of the official platform of the Republican Party."
President Biden: "Let me be clear. This fight is far from over—far from over. I’ve been engaged in this work my whole career, and we are going to be ramping up our efforts to overcome again—for the people, for our very democracy."
Vice President Harris: "The President and I are undeterred, and I know the American people are as well. Like generations before, we will not give up, we will not give in, and we will continue the fight to strengthen the right to vote."
Speaker Pelosi: "Our American Democracy is in peril, and today, every single Senate Republican voted against saving it. Democrats will not be deterred in our fight for the For The People Act. Our Republic is at a crossroads, and it is up to us to save it."

Having initially ruled it out, following the Senate GOP blocking a 6th Jan commission to look into the trump insurrectionists, what part GOP members and team trump played in that,Pelosi has said she will decide this week if she'll create a committee to investigate. The House of course under the Dems will have sweeping powers.

We're at 550+ trumpettes arrested for the capitol insurrection attempt, Roger Stones involvement and his direct connection to trump and the Proud Boys and the planning that went into their actions is under further scrutiny. Remember Stones pardon from trump doesn't cover his actions here.
Flynn's pardon also doesn't cover the insurrection attempt. We know he's a fully paid up Qanon believer, we know his brother was involved in the decision to delay action at the Capitol (which the army initially denied) and he'd spent the month before whipping up the supporters. Flynn had told supporters they had reached a "crucible moment", "there has to be sacrifice", "We're in a battle … for the heart and soul of the country," things that had been repeated in the court documents over those charged...

Since we were talking about how compromised trump was...
Remember how Kushner couldn't get security clearance until trup overrode it to give him it, then almost immediately Kushner used US intelligence to curry favour with MBS, who then used that information to purge anyone he thought was against him.
Remember how trump lied about having no business interests in Saudi - you can read about the money he made from them here:
https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-saudi-arabia...
Remember how The Saudis blockaded Qatar until just after Qatar bailed out Kushners failing 666 fifth avenue...
Remember how trump refused to take action over MBS ordering the death of US journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was dismembered and disposed of.
The NY times have a report on how four of the Saudis who took part in that murder received paramilitary training in the United States in 2017. The owner of the company that provided the training (Cerberus) was Stephen A. Feinberg who trump tried to appoint as head of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board in 2018.

Just for reference, the mod didn't over-react, and I would have done the same had I'd have come across the post first. It was just a routine mod action.
To be honest, that is even more worrying - that a 'seasoned' Mod would take the same heavy-handed course of action, without knowing anything about the poster in question or the the thread, or conferring with anyone else "Do not copy and paste content from newspapers, news sites or other websites. This is a breach of their copyright and any such threads will be deleted."
The rules are here should anyone wish to read further:

Nothing about banning, or any other action - yet Mods and Big Al decides this is an appropriate response. Their playground, their rules, but clarification is required.
