It's not as though some decidedly northern or not-very-southern locations in the bunch are set to benefit via job creation and regeneration activity, simpler planning, lower taxes including tax breaks to encourage construction and investment (enhanced capital allowance) and full business rates relief for all new business and existing businesses which are expanding. Employer NIC relief is on its way apparently. The guy on the radio doesn't want competition from anywhere - dreamworld and a great remainerist punt. There's a minor downside relating to domestic relocation but business rates relief for new businesses sends a clear signal.
It’s just another view on freeports - they have some benefits as well as downsides as you may expect. Lol at those who can only froth due to the source. (goes off to google Meghan and freeports).

It looks a valid threat from what he said and how freeports work.

The other aspect seems to be you can “process” within the freeport and hence skirt tariffs for parts and only see the fully assembled tariff. Does that potentially only help businesses with internal domestic sales rather than onward export to eg EU? Maybe, but still a boost.

Could we have done it anyway? They seem to already exist in the EU so brexit relevance is questionable perhaps.

Some businessesn cope with competition better than others, which goes some way to explaining why it's not compulsory to remain successful. Some business owners not in succesful regions may be twitter and bisted as per remainers.

Are these Freeports any different than the ones we had previously or are there new benefits?

It doesn't seem so based on this, drawing upon Uni of Sussex (the Boris deal = -4.4% GDP, so some will dismiss).

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/fre...

There seem to be pros and cons as with most things. I'd be interested to know if they make any difference to RoO issues for onward exports if any processing is done within them that affects the tariffs that would apply - but presumably not as it may not change the view of an entity like the EU.

Along with the infra-bank with a tiny amount of money, it is all coming across as perhaps more PR than substance. This should not perhaps be too surprising as if there were serious economy boosting steps we could take now that we couldn't pre-brexit then we'd all know about them and understand the argument.

It is notable that many of the noiser pro-brexit crowd have fallen silent. Not a peep from some of the loud fishing advocates, now more worked up about a young couple who it seems deserve great frothing now.

hehe

Complainitis strikes again.

As a policy it's just been introduced in the budget and freeports will begin operations from late 2021. How can it be anything other than a future benefit when it starts in the future,

Your jammy dodge is a fail.

Looks like Gove was getting his numbers from Priti Patel or Diane Abbott.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/mar/06/u...

Meanwhile it seems Boris managed to secure an effective drop in quota in practical terms for UK fishermen. What do you think about that Sway - “good job by Frost” still?

Sounds bad from a sustainability POV if they have to throw fish that they don't have any quota for away.

One of the things one fish fanatic leaver said would “get better” post brexit too.

The “Hall of Wrongness” continues to fill.

As predicted - the US did the same deal with the EU over the previous trump tariffs spat.

Just a day later than the UK.

Will this 24 hour difference still be claimed as a brexit win?

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-05...

It is interesting to look back on what Boris said:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/us-suspends-tar...

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "It shows what the UK can do as an independent trading nation, striking deals that back our businesses and support free and fair trade."

It must have been known that the EU would get the same deal at the time. Is this spin too far? You can understand them being desperate to turn any news story into a brexit win, but it is sailing pretty close to the wind.

The UK was first though, that's all that matters. And with each of these small "wins" the 50 year dividend of Brexit will be delivered.

Only about another 18000 to go!rofl

Genuine question.

Has the U.K. agreed a 4 month truce are per the EU or are punitive tariffs dropped permanently?

4 months but "in an effort to reach a negotiated solution" so presumably temporary with a view to something sensible and more long lasting being agreed.

Just realised that Test and Trace has cost about £550 for every single man, woman and child in the United Kingdom.

More Brexit news:
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/mar/06/u...

The Cabinet Office run by Michael Gove has been officially reprimanded by the UK Statistics Authority for using unpublished and unverifiable data in an attempt to deny that Brexit had caused a massive fall in volumes of trade through British ports.

Posted before. Two statisticians arguing has to be one of the least box office fights of the century smile

Actual ONS stats for trade due Friday I think (usually around the 12th). So we'll all be able to pick the nuts out of them, the preceding few months where stockpiling might have occurred and the preceding 12-48mths to compare with norms from there I guess. I'm sure you'll be straight on it and giving us the chart.

If Gove ends up looking like a plum it wouldn't be much change from normal.
