You mean the USA, EU and Japan, I guess. The UK is a relative minnow in comparison, as its GDP is around 75% of Germany and 60% of Japan.

I’ll raise two points, one in (sort of) defence of the EU institutions and one absolutely not.

Large parts of the global space industry are governed by the set of ESA standards. I often wish they weren’t, but they are. Amazingly they are globally more influential than NASA. Before somebody argues ESA isn’t EU, etc…the EC and Parliament have far greater sway in there than anybody else.

Jeff(I think) raised China and the EU co-ordinating a European “response” to it. This has long been a bete noir for me, because the response has been more a case of the complete lack thereof! It’s been nothing less than a subject abrogation, for which they should be completely chastised. Whilst everyone liked to wk off about Trump being Putins bh, relatively unremarked upon was the US govt machine orientating itself away from a versus Russian approach, to a versus China. The US State dept is now Sino orientated. The media outlets have started to pick this up in the last yr or so, now referring to it as the Chilled War. The EU is absent.

So there you go, one defence - that the EC and EP via ESA largely set the standards globally for the space industry and one slating.

Sounds entirely fair.

EU influence you ask?

Well, shall we start with the fact that EU is collectively the biggest donor for international aid in the world, providing over € 50 billion a year to help overcoming poverty and advance global development.

Judging by the adverts on my TV every day, they aren't doing a very good job.

hehe

I'm assuming by "collectively", we're once again talking of EU nations, rather than the EU?

Nope. But it's a tad "stolen credit" in this context.

Germany? Influential.

France, Netherlands and Spain? Definitely, especially considering their ex-empires.

EU itself as an entity? So far, the only example has been given by someone who's only given it to amuse me...

On that basis we can also conclude that the EU was the most successful at the London 2012 Olympic Games laugh

It’s hilarious rofl

What he meant to say was the EU gives very little ... but Nation states who happen to be part of the EU give quite a lot

As do lots of countries that aren’t in the EU

It’s an absolutely irrefutable fact that the EU, despite never ever entering a team in the Olympics, has won more medals in the history of the Olympics than any other nation ... amazingly even in the Olympics held before the EU existed

Since 1896 the EU has competed in 48 Olympiads and won 2568 gold medals

How amazing is that !
