Murray Walker and James Hunt were my childhood, Sunday afternoon at my Gran and Grandads watching the F1. There were no better commentators, knowledge, enthusiasm and just a little bit crackers the perfect combination.

RIP

I’ll have to stop now, I’ve got a lump in my throat.
I just thought that!
Damon hill winning the WDC in 1996?
Distinctly remember watching that aged 12, after getting up early to watch it smile

A shame but a great run.
Will always be the commentators voice when I think of F1, back when it was interesting. As well as all other racing

Ironically, although he didn't come up with the popularly ascribed Mars 'work, rest and play' slogan, he did write a few bon mots in his advertising career:

"Walker does own up to coining what he calls 'trite but successful phrases', among them 'Opal Fruits: made to make your mouth water'; 'Trill makes your budgie bounce' and the fantastic 'An only budgie is a lonely budgie'."

RIP, Muddly Talker.

I mean, 97 is a great innings and I confess that he has been in my "Oh, are they still alive?" (or "please hang on in there") category for a few years, but... a sad day.

Sad but inevitable day. If you haven't read his autobiography it is worth reading as it is full of his war time exploits and his career before motor racing all equally colourful.

F1 commentary has never been the same nor could it be since he left as he mixed knowledge with unbridled enthusiasm which carried all

The Queen, Sir David Att, and Murray, great bastions of the UK over the years.

The great thing about Murray was even his mistakes were much loved, they actually added to it! He loved the sport and people loved him for that.
