Aggression by Russia/uk?
Discussion
On it's way to Odessa in Ukraine, it's waters off Crimea that are still recognised as being Ukranie and illegally occupied by Russia.
And yes an SU-24 dropped bombs in front of the ships path, I imagine close enough to look like they made a point but far enough that there is no way they could have actually done any damage.

I would imagine the RN knew exactly what they were doing and also the consequences, they're just proving a point that they do not recognise Russia's annexing of Crimea.
Exactly. A Type 45 like HMS Defender is most certainly NOT going to be troubled by an SU24M if things got really seriousShoe on other foot: I'm sure the UK would do similar if a Russian vessel sailed into our waters.
I guess the difference, or issue, is to what extent Russia sees Ukraine as it's own? A UK parallel might be diago Garcia. If the Chinese rocked up saying: the UN says this isn't yours, so we'll do what we want" I would expect most in the UK would be cheesed off.
So it would be naive in the extreme for the RN to sail into Crimea and pretend the Russian occupation wouldn't be an issue.
The UN has already proved itself to be worthless when it comes to aggression by powerful states.
And I believe, but might not be correct, that there are in fact a lot of ethnic Russians in Crimea (and bits of Georgia that Russia has nicked) so it's not as straight forward as it might seem.

Russian military craft infringe British territory all the time. I guess the difference, or issue, is to what extent Russia sees Ukraine as it's own? A UK parallel might be diago Garcia. I'm sure this is a political act dreamt up by Bozza and his tory chums designed to appeal to a certain demographic. See the RN recently chugging off to confront French fisherfolk.
Is there a by-election on the horizon?
Carrying out freedom of navigation activity in and over disputed waters isn't a new thing. Is there a by-election on the horizon?
Looks like it went closer than the 12 nautical miles distance that Russia claims as its territorial waters.
