So, now the Russians have clearly stated they will attack future perceived transgressions, the exercise should be repeated just to emphasise the point; right?

Russian Air Force - second most powerful air force in the world, second only to USA.

If 5th gen aircraft aren't your thing, the MIG 35 (entered service 2019) is a formidable aircraft, as are the MIG 31 (older but still one of the fastest interceptors out there
Eh? They have literally 2-3 airworthy SU57 and 8 mig 35s rofl

This thread is wonderful, I suspect there are several ex 'spacies' who never quite made into the adult team.

How many F-35B has the UK got ? Answer; 21. Should we laugh at that figure too ?

How many were originally planned ? Answer; 138. How many will we probably get ? Answer; 48.

I'll let you do the maths on the total number of multirole/ air superiority fighters in the Russian Air Force for comparison.

PS. Re; the Sukhois and MIGs. They don't all get delivered once.

Highly impressive show of naval force from the Russians, an entire 2 patrol boats whilst we sailed by the home of their Black Sea fleet.

I suspect the operators on Defender got a nice afternoon's free training with their new toys on proper hostile aircraft.

The immediate observation is that Russian intelligence and long range awareness sucks. 3 ships pole up in broad daylight and they scramble a couple of coastguard cutters and some aeroplanes that they hadn't had time to load up.

It might have got a bit more crunchy if they'd had time to get a proper boat in the area. I doubt we'd have been quite as cocky playing chicken with an Udaloy or equivalent.

A bit more info and a video here. They did open fire, but our destroyer was so far away it didn't notice.

It the video is real, the Russians were not that far away when they fired. Certainly within 20km which I believe is about the range of the RN’s gun. No evidence of rounds landing in the water and I guess the RN’s radar would have tracked rounds in the air. Were they blanks?

This is a game NATO and Russia have been playing for years. The Russians aren't happy that after the collapse of the USSR that Western countries came to exercise more influence over their buffer states.

Quite. The book ‘Prisoners of Geography’ covers this very well. The USA is protected from attack by two massive oceans, the UK by the Channel, but there is no natural barrier that stops invading armies attacking Russia. Just a wide open plain perfect for advancing over. See Swedish invasion of Russia, Napoleon, Barbarossa, 20 million dead in living memory. Hence their buffer states and twitchy-ness when potential enemies get too close.

Would that be Lebedev? Who has lived in the UK since he was 8 years old?

Precisely - especially at very close quarters, when the Russians could unleash the new "Мешок для дерьма" very short range missile (good for engagements at up to 250 metres) - designed to have such an extreme non-ballistic flight path that NATO CIWS systems are reduced to wondering WTAF? instead of trying to defeat it.

The Irony of your first and last line.

Reality of the state of Russian military is they have a lot of old equipment and the majority of new stuff never really delivers. Look at the T-14, something that was supposed to worry the West but has had it's order massively reduced and they are still yet to deliver.

I’m thinking of a more simplistic “two ships closing on each other with a risk of collision”. Russian hardware is generally flaky and badly maintained, but they have a lot of it. We launch 2 missiles, both of which are likely to hit their target. They launch 10, half of them will fall in the sea, 3 will be a close miss, 2 will hit. All of them soak up countermeasures.

i.e. The F35 has more customer aircraft, delivered. There's not been a lot of interest even in the Su-57.

Did they ever get the engines sorted, or is it still running the old ones that need not so stealthy afterburners to go supersonic with weapons?

Yup, nato has over 600 F35s rolled out not to mention raptors, typhoons, rafale, and thousands of fa18s/F15s/f16. Russia with its 2 SU57, 8 mig 35s and buckets of old legacy stuff simply isn’t in the air power game. Despite all their bravado they know this so speak lots about mythical missiles
