Lainston House?

Hotel pricing has always been different. It’s £40 for two cocktails minimum in most of the fancy 5 star London hotels. £10 for a bottle of beer etc. tbh it’s £7 or so for a bottle at most places I’ve been to eat recently.
I'd feel like a sodding mug if I paid £28 for a G&T, or 40 quid for a couple of cocktails.

Ah well sometimes ….

I was at a fancy wedding a couple of year back with the wife and all the women were drinking these fruit bowl G&T’s so she decided she wanted a G&T ( she’s normally a beer/wine drinker)

So off I toddle to the bar and order a beer and a G&T .. Barman says what sort? I say just a normal one scratchchin first mistake

I went back to the table with a pint and a small straight glass with a G&T and no fruit in it second mistake

Third mistake was giving it to her and being outed as a tight northern bd ( fair comment really )

Finally I was then on the naughty step for the rest of the night nono

In hindsight I should have just paid the £28 or whatever it was for a glorified fishbowl of fruit

Having recently got back into the dating scene and being the "I'll get the drinks" gentlemanly sort that I am, it is certainly beginning to add up especially when inflation is shrinking my already un-stellar wage.

£16 for two cocktails at a bar in Chester the other night. I know cocktails are normally not cheap so didn't mind too much.
Then last night at a normal pub, I naively assumed it would be cheaper but it was still £10 for a pint and a bottle of cider!

It seems only a year or two ago I was paying £2.50 a pint if that...

We refused to pay .. they threatened calling the Police, we countered with trading standards and after a bit of “a row down near slough” they reduced the bill by £2 a pint !

Tell them to call the police, if they want. it's nothing to do with the police. It's a civil matter, not a criminal matter.

As long as you are not running away and have means to pay - then it's civil.

I think in the circs you were on safe ground.

I'm pleased to see that the armageddon that seemed to be heading for pubs hasn't happened, for the most part anyway.

6-8 months ago it was widely predicted that pubs would be forced to charge £10 a pint, customers would desert them in droves, and they would get wiped out by the rise in energy costs.

My local village pubs are still very busy with both food and drink, and a pint is still around £3.80. The landlords say they are doing fine. The London pubs I frequent regularly (such as 'The Harp' for anyone who works in town) is still packed out busy as well, and still less than £7 a pint for most ales.
Interesting point, that was what was being said. In the news recently a different approach to keeping going. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64557630

I'm not sure how accurate this is, I'd thought the Wipers had stopped doing food when it changed hands. We shall see.

Re Earthdweller's rubbish curry. Yes, had similar, so very clearly done to a price. On a par with a ready meal.

Where was that in Chester ?

In Liverpool, in The Hummingbird or Petit Café Du Coin, cocktails are round £9.50 to £10.00. In The Old Bank, 2 for £10 or £12, depending on something which I'm not 100% about.

I was waiting for someone to wheel that one out, thanks for not disappointing me smile

As it happens, I could afford to be there. For me, affordability isn't the issue, I'd genuinely feel like a mug paying that.

Sure, not everyone is like that, and many folk will simply not care.

I remember about 15 years ago my now wife and I went to a wedding at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford. We ordered two G&Ts and it was 24 quid. For fking Gordon's and Schwepps.

I could afford it then and can easily now, but still felt like I had had my pants pulled down and royal butt fked . I don't mind paying for quality but feel mugged off paying that for the bottom shelf kit.

I would guess Liquor and Co which is actually good value now compared to a few other places in town.

https://liquorand.co/

Pints are getting closer to £6 for anything decent now in town.

The cocktails were at a new ish place called Northgates, at the top end of the rows. To be fair the portion size and liquid to ice cube ratio was amongst the best I've seen, and they were damn good cocktails. The proprietor is a lovely chap too. Hence, I didn't mind so much.

It was the subsequent average pints in an average pub for a strong price that stung. That was called the Queen's Head or something similar.

I don't know that place. But places do tend to come and go around that area.

The Old Queens Head at the bottom of Foregate Street, right opposite The Square Bottle I assume ? All human life is there (I've seen some right sights in that place) !

Another new one.

I tend to favour Telfords, The Tap and The Botanist. I used to like The Coach House, but that has gone right down the stter.
