Always amusing to pop back into this thread and see the anti-mask brigade frothing, the mask-wearers frothing back, and a thousand people who refuse to understand why a mask might just make some a little more comfortable.

Want to wear one? Great! You should be able to do so without criticism.
Don’t want to wear one? Also great! Crack on, but try to avoid telling everyone why, just keep it to yourself.

If only life was that simple laugh

If I walk holding a cross out in front of me at all times, is that ok, too?
Just checking. Because it is statistically as effective.

I still see a surprising amount of mask wearers out and about around these parts. Some appear quite frail and/or elderly so fair enough, if it makes them feel safer.

However, of these residual mask-wearers, I am continually astounded by the very high proportion (way more than when masks were mandated) that wear their mask in the pointless "over mouth, but not over nose" configuration.

It really does reduce these few remaining masks into a psychological crutch.

I am convinced that there are some out there who wear them as a kind of barrier to others, not in a Covid way, just they are introvert or have general social issues, so wearing a mask is something to hide behind.

Probably OK, but you might find some random weirdos taking your picture to post online. wink

Flew out to Vienna today and was not looking forward to having to mask up on public transport again, mainly the train to the city centre. Vienna is the only state mandating mask use in Austria.

Happy to report less than 50% were masked up so I didn’t bother, no funny looks. Happy days.

Full on Masketeer striding around Wickes this morning, double masks on, one around his neck, the other over his mouth, and to complete the effect, dark sunglasses! rofl Looked like a mummy!

I gave him a wide berth as he looked like a robber in disguise, nutcase Covidian, possibly both!

I'm sorry to those who get offended by those of us who post reports on these strange sightings, they are less common than they used to be at the height of project fear, but they do make me laugh!

I can only speak speak personally but pointing out that taking pictures of strangers and posting reports of other people wearing masks is weird isn't the same as being "offended" so no need for you to apologise.

The one “I’m really interested in” is you showing me where I’ve said I “love the masks”. Looks like you’ve just invented another thing to stamp your feet about.

They say everyone needs a hobby but you masks obsessives really are a bit weird. At least CCD likes to learn new words and now amusingly squawks “sea-lion” in every post. hehe
Mate, if you want to wear your little mask, that's fine. But why always hurling the insults at everyone who doesn't want to join in with your mask pantomime (which is, thankfully, now about 97% of the population it seems)?

Always with the insults, yet never with any rational explanation for the mask wearing. I find the mindset fascinating. smile

And you base your belief that "I love the masks", "want to wear a little mask" and that it is my "mask pantomime" on what exactly? If you think that saying people are being weird and obsessive about masks is "hurling insults" then you're rather oversensitive.

As for CCD squawking "sea-lion" and not knowing what it means - that's just a statement of fact.

As you have observed - the vast majority aren't wearing masks unless they've been requested to (a pretty rare event) but you're like a dog with a bone, you just can't let it go - hence asking me for a "rational explanation for the mask wearing". I'm sure your Google skills are as good as mine and you can find whatever you want to support an opinion for or against masks - but the key point is why are you so bothered now that the majority aren't wearing them?

Sealioning (also sea-lioning and sea lioning) is a type of trolling or harassment that consists of pursuing people with relentless requests for evidence, often tangential or previously addressed, while maintaining a pretense of civility and sincerity ("I'm just trying to have a debate"), and feigning ignorance of the subject matter.[1][2][3][4]

Well done for cutting and pasting. If you understood the words then you'd realise you've been wrong all this time. hehe

If you're looking for actual evidence then actually you won't find any supporting your opinion.

But you just keep believing. smile

CCD! If only you had known, or understood words, you would have understood via condescending dismissal how wrong you were.

I'm sure you feel a silly billy. The single line no biggie brigade win again.

…and from nowhere the mask mandate at my workplace has been dropped. One rather suspects it has finally sunk in at board level that wearing masks when trying to develop relationships and win new business puts us at a significant disadvantage to our competitors.

For reference, my role is similar to a double glazing salesman in so far as it involves me sitting on the sofa in (usually wealthy ABC1) clients’ homes for either side of two hours a pop, four or five houses a day, five or six days a week, being nice. Non clinical, non medical, financial stuff.

Email does tail off with caveats that the mandate will be under review and covid infections will continue to be monitored and considered for misconduct investigation, absences will be paid at SSP, mandate could be reintroduced as winter infection numbers rise yadda yadda

Edited to add I can confirm the awesome effectiveness of cloth Etsy masks as I haven’t been ill at any time in these last three years, nor have I ever tested positive for the virus despite weekly testing and having had it in the house twice over the period. In fairness that only shows their effectiveness in protecting me. We know they’re designed to protect others. Note almost no one, even at the very height of the pandemic and when mask compliance in public was at 99%, opted to wear a mask to protect me.

Anyway, good that this is at least temporarily out of the way.

If you came in my house with a mask to win my business I'd certainly close the door before you even entered.
