I don't think showing good manners is the same as being "fearful". I don't know how effective a mask is or isn't (I don't have the scientific qualifications that many other PHers appear to have). As I said above if somebody asks me to wear one whilst going into their premises I'll wear one. To me personally it seems arrogant and self-entitled to do otherwise.
While I understand the logic, there is a risk that, if businesses keep the signs up to appease the fearful, and in fact everyone carries on wearing them to be 'polite', the businesses are going to think 'most people prefer masks, ergo we'll keep on the side of most people and keep asking for masks to be worn' and the whole nonsense continues to perpetuate.
Exactly - it's a classic example of a 'self-fulfilling prophecy', which is why (as others have pointed out)
it took several weeks after July 19th for mask wearing to subside, as people didn't want to be seen to be
going against the majority position. Once that position (mask wearing when 'politely requested' in shops)
eventually dipped to 30-40% or so, many of the remaining sheeple people then become sufficiently
emboldened to stop wearing theirs too.

Nah, let's stand outside our houses and bang saucepan lids together. That'll keep the nasty rona away.
I wonder if any of the pot bangers look back on that and wonder what it was all about? They were mad for it in my street! Oddly, I can't hear any of them banging any pots in solidarity for al the NHS staff about to be sacked for not wanting the jab...

Bloke in the warehouse this morning with a mask.

I mentioned to him that it was no longer a requirement and was personal choice. He informed me that he would like to continue wearing one.

"fine by me" I said and left him to continue wearing it under his chin smilesmile

Folk are bloody weird.
You want it to be personal choice, but you think it weird if someone actually does take their personal choice?

Indeed folk ARE weird aren't they?
wink
Are you a bit thick ?
Yes.
Yes I believe he is

I'm astonished that HMG/psyops department actually managed to scare the fk out of the majority of the population!

They did do an incredible (if not entirely honest) job!

I wonder what it all cost?

And how they'll unravel the fear (or even if they'll bother)?

We had to drive across country to the funeral of a distant elderly relative today. Stopped at the services on the motorway and probably 80% were masked up, the majority looked to be young and healthy professionals. Got to the crematorium, full of mostly elderly and not a mask to be seen, lots of typical funeral behaviour like hugs and handshakes. The contrast was really quite remarkable.

I wonder if many people just don't read the news? I went to the supermarket this evening and only saw one other person without a mask. The supermarket (Aldi) had taken down all the signs about them as far as I could see, but it didn't seem to make much difference.

Me, I was happy I could see where I was going!

Everywhere I’ve been today everyone is still masked up. Sainsburys still has their ‘you must wear a mask unless exempt’ sign up. It has made no difference as far as I can see.

People love masks/fear.

...but these same people all seem to know immediately whenever an English mask mandate is introduced,
such as last November, as mask-wearing goes from negligible to 90% overnight, so why are they blissfully
unaware when the same mandates are abolished weeks/months later??

I wear a disposable mask as I have a persistent cough and still getting over a stinking cold so me coughing in the vicinity of others can be worrying to them and its something I am aware of.

Yesterday and today I have been in Morrisons, Aldi, Sainsburys and Lidl. In all settings I would say 95%+ makes, in fact I only spotted 3 people, 2 in a huge Morrisons and 1 in Aldi not wearing. That excludes a few staff behind screens.

laugh Her reaction to being called an anti-vaxxer was excellent; I actually watched that live and couldn't help cheering her on. I think JHB is brilliant - off topic, she's married, so am I, but I would, no doubt!

Anyway, you're right, the official narrative that masks work has become ingrained into most people's minds by now, which I find sad. Was it Goebbels (or somebody, I forget) who said if you repeat a lie often enough it becomes the truth? Or something like that.
I love JHB, but in the words if the recently deceased, and sorely missed Mr Loaf.....I wouldn't do that.

And masks...they can continue to fk off, and when they've done that they can fk off a bit more. I had to break my near 2yr run and wear one a t a funeral the other week but other than that i was doing well....they are useless.

Anyone wearing one to appease others because they feel it's courteous is simply pandering to a neurosis that people need to be shocked out of. Just stop being pathetic and get on with life you idiots.

I went to mine at lunch, they had a "please wear a mask if you can" sign, around 70/30 did but staff was around 50/50. Sure they were very pleased to not have to wear the things 8 hours a day, although even before I noticed the exemptions seemed to be higher amongst them than customers.

Apparently masks are ‘encouraged’ at Sainsburys. I’ll be in Waitrose tomorrow, unmasked.
