Well here we are with one of the most momentous occasions in the history of Britain. HMQE2 celebrates her platinum jubilee marking her reign the longest serving Monarch in our history.
Like or loathe the Monarchy, that along with her work-rate, dedication and stabilising influences is surely is worthy of note if not celebration?
My road is already planning a street party which I think is great for community cohesion. Fortunately we live opposite a park so will have plenty of space to organise things. I'm in charge of the beers

From the comfort of my sofa; I shall tip a nod to Her Maj in recognition of her valued service and enjoy the bank holiday.
But street parties and similar celebrations? That's a bit 1981 for me.
I am a staunch royalist in respect of the value they bring to the country, but I don't see the need to fawn over them.

I shall raise a glass in recognition of her relentless dedication, service, and work. I think the Queen has done a lot of good for the country, and that on balance, the Royal family are are an asset rather than a drain.
But that's as far as it goes. I won't be partying in the street or crying my eyes out in joy. That sort of thing is a bit 'Princess Diana'.
No fan of the royal family or royalty in general.
Respect for someone dedicating their life to a role, although clinging to the role is kind of sad.

I suspect that in term of our current sense of royalty as duty, she will be; it will just move to an (over)entitled figurehead.
I can think of lots of things to do over a long weekend, bunting and union jacks do not feature highly in any of them.

Somewhat accidentally (going to see Liam Gallagher with our kids at Knebworth) we will be in London from the Wednesday evening till Sunday. It’s going to be interesting to see what transpires, but we certainly won’t be waiting in the Mall from dawn to watch a horse and carriage roll past while waving a little flag. I have huge respect for Her Maj, she has provided a figurehead for the country for 70 years, and for that I’ll raise a glass.
However, I just can’t see her successors having the same effect. The Firm and surrounding apparatus of protocols, multiple palaces, courtiers, PR (mis)advisors seem totally out of touch with a modern democracy. Charlie will take over, but his singular job has to be to slim down the monarchy in every way - the nation needs well dressed people to unveil plaques.
However, I just can’t see her successors having the same effect. I was very pleased to find our annual old boys piss up in town is on that Saturday, atmosphere should be wonderful. Won't be distracted from the serious job of reaquainting with friends but I am anticipating a lovely buzz. Our Liz is a remarkable woman and will be celebrated as such, I have no doubt, but yes, I do think that faces in suits and dresses should be the MO of the next generation. Couldn't hold a candle to the, well, majesty of Elizabeth.
I was 12 in 1977 and recall the silver jubilee as a big deal. Her Maj did a big tour of the country, there were parades as she visited Edinburgh where I lived, stamps, TV, blanket coverage. Don’t know if it was serfdom, but everyone was expected to join in. I remember there was a street party - my family didn’t join in, I recall riding my bike in laps round their big long table much to their apparent irritation.
