HM The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations?

I will pour a quiet dram in her honour.

There is great value in having a person to whom all politicians must bend the knee, something I feel presidential systems lack.

You don't have to look far in the pantheon of world leaders to see egos that have elevated individuals above their capability like a hot air balloon lifting its cargo of mediocrity to the heady heights of a messiah complex. I feel it is useful therefore to have someone who can look down on political leaders and, in regal tones, inform the prime minister that they are in fact being a knobber.

I'm sure there was more support for "the Family" in 1977, but then there wasn't the same level of public scrutiny. I was 18 then and rode my RD250 to the street party in my sister's road as my nephew was only 1, and his sister was well on the way!

Pushing for retirement at her age seems a bit mean though. Let her enjoy her jubilee first!

I have to admit I don’t get this attitude.
When I was younger I was a republican but over time I’ve come to see the value of the monarchy but if I genuinely felt the way the pair of you do I would have long since relocated to another country just to alleviate this kind of low level dissatisfaction.

My comment wasn't an approval for the cynicism being shown. It was written with a sigh of disappointment.
I like our Royal Family, I enjoy living in a land where they exist. Of course, they are a complete nonsense and not really needed in any way, but so what? Not needing them is not a reason to get rid of them (that's a slippery slope for many UK citizens) but enjoying them being around is definitely a reason to keep them.

It certainly would. They are just there, and irrelevant.

It will be the only one in my lifetime so yes, MrsVS is a bit of a royals fan so a couple of days in London followed by a couple in Windsor to celebrate keeps her happy and gives me many Brownie points

Actually "going to see it" is taking it to a whole new level

Fair enuff , I’m not going to slaughter anyone who really loves Liz, it’s quite a personal thing really especially for older people like my mum who can remember the coronation.

I shall raise a glass in recognition of her relentless dedication, service, and work. I think the Queen has done a lot of good for the country, and that on balance, the Royal family are are an asset rather than a drain.

But that's as far as it goes. I won't be partying in the street or crying my eyes out in joy. That sort of thing is a bit 'Princess Diana'.

Things have changed slightly....

My wife has volunteered to help with the surprisingly well organised Jubilee celebrations in our village and is apparently going to bake cakes, erect decorations, and run a stall/bar for 3 hours.

My Mum has also pencilled in a family meal/party for the day after, and has purchased various Fortnum and Mason Jubilee items, plus decorations, and even bought 'fun' M&S Jubilee T Shirts for my wife and my brothers wife She is also planning on making a Jubilee Trifle recipe from the competition Mary Berry just hosted...

So yeah, I seem to have been dragged into it! But I will take it as an opportunity to just drink wine/champagne and eat cake all weekend

We're closing my street and doing a big barbecue with tables and stuff like that.

To be honest, this stuff is just a good chance to form a decent community spirit and get to know the neighbours a bit better. We have a good vibe on the road with lots of children and friendly people.
