Having watched it all, it would have been easy for Don Lemon to have gone easy on Musk, pitched him easy questions trying to get his X deal back on. Instead, he acted like a proper journalist, asked tough questions, presented receipts and evidence, and maintained composure and track even as Musk got more and more mad at him.

The Overton window has shifted so far to the left that it's almost a meaningless question at this point.

There are plenty of positions I take that would have been centrist, or at least moderate 5-10 years ago, that would now have the blue hair pronoun crowd calling me a nazi.

The big problem with satellite is cloud cover rather than terrain.

Also latency... But if you can get other forms of internet you'll generally choose them over satellite for that very reason.

My concern will be worrying that Starlink would go out of business suddenly. Just like every other satellite internet provider that hasn't got loads of government money being poured into it.

Huh? Does your Sky TV dish not work when it’s cloudy or raining? Latency - the things are in a very low orbit, latency is perfectly good for gaming for example. I’ve got a sister in Snowdonia (very cloudy, mountains) and quite a few friends from Skye to the Cotswolds with Starlink. Every single one absolutely raves about it.

You’ve got isolated villages in mountainous regions of the world who now have cheap access to information and educational matter.

I know that this thread is rabid in its outlook, but the anti-Starlink stuff posted is just factually and technically rubbish.

I've now watched it too. TBH I don't think Lemon was actually tough on Musk. Maybe the ketamine question, as it was a medical perscription and relates to
his mental health so perhaps it maybe could be argued that was a little invasive, but as it was already public knowledge, I think that has be in scope too.

He just didn't like it because Lemon got the better of him in a number of areas.

You can't have it both ways here. The reason this interview happened is because Elon tweeted that it would be good if Don 'and others on the left put their shows on this platform'.

This question and many of the others just took words and concepts Elon uses all the time and asked him to dig into them. He was frequently not able to do so.

And I was wondering if it was a worthwhile alternative to Vodafone or EE wireless broadband since I live out in the sticks.

Couple of my clients have it who are out in the sticks. It’s frankly amazing. They get 100mbs+ download speeds where they used to get 2-5mbs. And it’s bloody cheap for what it is.

I’d definitely get it if I didn’t have a good connection.

Wow, thats a good deal. For me, living in the sticks here in California, I can get the full performance, but I dont have a choice of plans or anything. So its $120 a month for the service, $600 for the equipment and even $20 for shipping! And dont forget tax on that too.

I guess they dont care about getting customers here, but I can get unlimited 1GB Comcast for $105 a month including fees etc and get free equipment and install. Its not a good deal yet.

The really interesting thing for me about starlink is going to be the impact on the aviation industry.

Yep - one of my mates is an aeronautical engineer and was saying about the costs of getting (I can’t remember the planes or exact costs ) internet on an airbus was about a million dollars - and relatively speaking, it’s pretty poor. Starlink $150k equipment and $25k/month and it’s fast. I suspect those costs will fall.

I hadn't considered the additional cost of kit - the 2 that I use just now had a hub included in the monthly price.

I got something recently that was a refurbished dish/hub (I forget the price) and the actual contract was £79 a month.

We are moving next year - probably out to North Yorks - and it’s great knowing that no matter where we go we will get fast internet. I’m not bothered if it’s a bit more than a normal, terrestrial provider, we both have good jobs and WFH so I don’t care - it’ll be worth it. Also the speeds are only going to get better - currently 6000 satellites up, 20% of the projected total.

And by way of extra dividend the money gets ploughed into SpaceX. There are a lot of haters out there, and I freely admit that Musk can make some truly stupid posts, but what he’s doing in the realm of access to space is truly incredible. It really brings home what a “closed shop” gravy train it’s been for the likes of Boeing etc.

Also - on the subject of Musk’s “outlandish” claims about his companies - I watched a live feed last night from one of the Neuralink trial patients. Quadriplegic guy, he was able to control his computer solely by thinking about it - it was really quite impressive and a complete game changer for him.

It's also getting big with shipping. Curently it's an expensive and limited service. Starlink is magnitudes cheaper.

The downside is crews are now less sociable because they all have unlimited internet in their cabins.
