Florida-man biggrin

Don't know what it is, but I'm avoiding!
I think it's probably my old mate Jason. Best avoided, yes.

Dont forget that Musk promised the 'cheap' Tesla.

We’ve updated our future vehicle lineup to accelerate the launch of new models.” Musk said we might see the vehicles in early 2025, if not later this year.

Anyone want to place a bet when this might happen?
Well, given every single other thing Musk has ever promised a timescale against (FSD, Tesla Semi, Cybertruck, Space-X missions to Mars) has been at least 6x longer than promised, if ever, my guess is 2040?
I've not been keeping up with Tesla, when was the Model 2/cheap Tesla announced?

It hasn't been formally announced.

The background is Musk was thinking about jumping past the Model 2 and just going straight to Robotaxi. Apparently in his book written a couple of years ago he has never been that interested in a 'cheap' $25,000 car. He thinks robotaxi is much more transformative.

They are planning a new factory which was going to build Robotaxi and Model 2. Then suppliers were told earlier this year they weren't going to bother with the Model 2; it was going to be only for Robotaxi. This was reported by Reuters. Musk said it was a 'lie'.

Musk then said on the earnings call they have capacity in their existing factories to build 3 million cars per year and they are currently at 2 million cars per year. So he is going to re-tool some of their existing factory capacity to fit in the Model 2.

So technically Reuters were correct, plans for the Model 2 had been cancelled for the new factory. But they didn't know the other part which was it was being to be squeezed into their existing factories. Whether that was the plan all along, or something cobbled together to rebuild investor confidence, who knows.

Next product announcement is going to be 8th Aug which may just be Robotaxi or might include Model 2 as well.

Surprising how often it comes up then.

2018 - Tesla eyes cost savings so it can make $25,000 cars in three years, Elon Musk tells MKBHD
2020 - Tesla’s Elon Musk said a $25,000 electric car with next-gen battery in the works
2023 - Tesla’s $25,000 ‘next-generation car’ will have a Cybertruck design

The notion of a $25k Tesla is attention grabbing I suppose.

Yeah, I've not read the book myself, but I saw a quote which basically implied the Model 2 and a $25,000 car was good for the share price, as it creates the 'growth stock' narrative of 50% CAGR etc etc. But behind closed doors, he keeps wanted to go straight for the robotaxi and forget about Model 2. And this was more than a couple of years ago, so not recent. Back then some of his senior engineers had to convince him that they should do both.

Ironically, considered that FSD has taken far longer than he expected, and still isn't complete, we now can say that would have been a disastrous move. However, taking all this into account, I think the original Reuters report was probably true in both the specifics and the intent.

Update on the Semi production:

https://electrek.co/2024/04/24/tesla-plans-electri...

I do love how some take the words of Tesla and Musk at face value. Lots of people claimed that the Semi was in production. But it seems that it isn’t after all, surprise surprise!

Seems that they have delivered a whopping 36 so far and are now claiming production in late 2025. So announced back in 2017 and still no production.

I saw one near where I live the other day. Pepsi deliver to a local garage. It did seem that the driver was having some issues. That central driving position might be good for some visibility, but for deliveries it’s not ideal. He kept getting out to check if he was parked correctly (side of the road. Can’t help thinking it’s another vanity project.

For those living in the USA, it’s well know that Florida-man is a real thing. From crazy meth heads to lunatics driving, we all know that Florida-man is a real thing. The phrase came from various news outlets running the bizarre crime reports, where it almost always seems to be in Florida….

And yes, avoid. I strongly recommend don’t drive in Florida, get someone else to do it for you.

Obviously Musk is just asking questions...whilst pushing conspiracy theories again

Such as if the recent Patriot Front march through Charleston that they promoted, boasted about was actually FBI trying to discredit them

This was the Patriot Front march through the streets of Charleston the other day

More layoffs at Tesla? Now its the head of the supercharger division and the head of new vehicles:

https://jalopnik.com/elon-musk-cuts-entire-tesla-s...

This is after the recent round of layoffs and the disaster of that process, which included two other senior execs too. I am not suggesting that senior execs are not replaceable or have some sort of protection in the business. But, thats a lot of experience and institutional knowledge that just walked out of the door in two key areas that Teslas has an advantage - battery tech and the supercharger network.
