A little over budget, but I'd imagine it's great fun:

Or a TVR S Series, you could get a great one for your budget and they're great fun.

The old Performance Car crew ( pre-EVO days ) really rated the S cars despite the much slated V6/V8 boat anchors that most people refer to They picked the V6 one ahead of the Integrale and E30 M3 Sport Evo at the time for a PCOTY feature
Liked the V8 one too - picked that over a 964, MX5 and BMW

They really are a blast to drive. Not massively fast by today's standards, but really are involving. Plus have such a great sound. Here's my old one on a trip to Southern France a few years back.
Found out the other week it now resides in Spain.

Yep another vote for the S series - still crazily undervalued. Read the review - describing the later Cologne V6 engine as “horrid” seems totally unfair to me. Cramped cockpit ? Not really - as long as you choose an S3C with the longer doors. I’m 6’2” and I slid in and out reasonably easily. Here's my old one on a trip to Southern France a few years back.

Coincidentally I replaced my S3 it with a rally prepped Series 2 Fulvia Coupe - loved it but in reality I missed the TiV…
Choose an S series with the chassis outriggers in good nick and you can’t go wrong. Having a boat anchor as an engine has advantages when it comes to maintenance and replacement parts. On the other hand if you buy a Fulvia there can be some potentially significant bills along the way relating to repair of body rot and front suspension/engine rebuilds in particular.

A bit of rot on a few panels visible but hopefully the structure is OK underneath but would need serious check as complicated to repair.I'd have been in that by now (despite the tarty stripes - added to take your eye off something?) but it's LHD. Doesn't worry me but I frighten my wife in a RHD car....

That write-up on the E30 M3 is hilarious They picked the V6 one ahead of the Integrale and E30 M3 Sport Evo at the time for a PCOTY feature
Makes a nice contrast to the endless eulogising that goes on through the rose-tinted specs nowadays. If everyone 'on-test' thought a 2.5 inline 4 in the E30 M3 was a handful, would have liked to have seen them try and keep an E12 M535i out of the hedges. Given back then 50:50 weight distribution was but a myth and the old M90 had something called 'torque' that the E30 M3 was never overtly familiar with, would probably have put an early end to Clarkson. More's the pity...
