At a quick glance, the crash impact must have been reasonably minor, but perhaps surprisingly, the insurer must have decided to 'write off' as an uneconomic repair.

100% agreed. I am disappointed with myself now that I have incremented his view count

I suspect the bent chassis leg might have a lot of decision making, more so when AM don't sell that portion, which means new chassis. Ultimately not really a surprise of the write off.

He said in the video that it has front suspension damage and a cracked front crash structure. Insurance companies are usually pretty hard-nosed and if they thought they could make more money by having it repaired then I guess they would. I'm assuming that, with a damaged bolt-on front crash structure there's no way of knowing whether the damage extends to the passenger cell without taking the car apart, which would represent too much sunk cost for the insurer to stump up just to find out how bad it was - so move it on and let someone else take the risk.

Another massive assumption on my part but I'm guessing that the new Vantage is still too new for there to be much of a market for second-hand parts so breaking it might not be financially viable, especially considering the customisable nature of the interior. It also means he's probably going to be paying retail for the bits. (As an aside I did a quick Google search to check and the only other new Vantage I found being broken had worse front quarter and door damage than the one in the video)

He said you cannot buy the leg as a normal retail customer in the video. I suspect the insurer like you say did not want to stump up the cash.

Lets see how it turns out, I don't really care if he is annoying, you can skip forward in youtube for you old farts . I just like the seeing how they go about putting the thing back on the road even though it might be modded from factory spec.

I dont think I would fancy buying that at a later stage once it has been "repaired" on a budget by someone who supposedly makes a living from YouTube rather than wrenching.

Hopefully he repairs it better than his granturismo with liberty walk kit, which got reversed into and truly bodged in terms of repair (with no video, unsurprisingly).

Found it intresting including the second video.

Shows that common sense means you can reduce costs, and I have no issue if he finds what appears to be the same parts but without a large mark up.

As long as he's honest when he sells it I thinks it good that it's rescued.

Really like Mat Armstrong, he seems like a really nice guy. Sure, he does some, er, questionable mods to some of his cars, but I find him really likeable and genuine. Always admits mistakes and is honest that he often knows little about the cars he is repairing.

Look forward to this and his Range Rover repairs developing.

54K seems strong money for a cat S,

Straight ones are 80K so his one repaired won't be worth that much.

He offers several thousand tickets for cheap unit price and uses a company that does random number generation to select the winner.

None of the cars he does are standard though so don't expect the Aston to be either.

Wow, thought I had entered a AMOC meeting with some of these comments.
Ok he may not be everyones taste and ill live with the hat (!) but i find his videos informative. He is having a go and actually I think its the first time I have seen someone take on a project like this with a latest Vantage.
