In our infinite wisdom, what was to be a small get together with friends for the start of the Platinum weekend has turned in to a BBQ for about 35 adults. No kids.
I have a Weber kettle and a gas 4 burner, so the plan is to cook on the kettle and keep warm in the gas.

Where would you recommend getting meat for this many, the nearest Costco is 30 miles away in Leeds so not the end of the world to go and buy, but a bit far to pop in and see what they have in the fridges this time of year given their website doesn;t show all fresh produce.
Do you think I should commit to Costco being the right place to source everything and just hope they have everything I want when I turn up, or should I go with a local meat supplier?
Nothing too extravagent, Jumbo sausages (or really tasty short ones), burgers, drumsticks, chicken skewers?
If it had been <10 people I would have done the shopping at M&S as their Best Ever burgers and Parmesan / truffle sausages are just lovely. But with it being so many and not winning Euromillions last week the budget has been tightened a little.

For comparison, the local wholesalers offer 8x 6oz burgers and 1.2kg of jumbo sausages for £9 each amongst other things. Buy 10 packs and two are free.

Have you not got a local butchers? Give them a call, tell them what you want and they'll do you a deal (at least they will if they're any good)

Having done this number of people and more a few times I’d say don’t do burgers and sausages. Do do

Spit roast loin of pork and or lamb ( can just churn away and unlikely to overcook)
Chicken wings. Pork ribs with varying levels of hot sauce / rub
A Mac n cheese
Chickens quarters / portioned oven cooked and bbq finished
A giant paella - get dish and burner from eBay.
A brisket if you can
Pasta with pesto or roasted veg served cold
A single bag of salad
Etc

Spend time drinking not cooking and flipping burgers smile

I've used Farmison lots in the past. Their meat is high quality with good welfare standards.

That used to be our rule, irrespective of numbers when everyone would bring some food to the party.
Fish is one of my favourite things to cook over real fire.

There's always loads of meat in Costco.

However, be aware regarding Costco meat:

1. It's high quality - this is not a cash and carry, £0.50p per burger type place.

as a result

2. It's not cheap. It's not hugely expensive for things like chicken breasts and mince, but you can buy cheaper (and still reasonable quality) from a supermarket.

For an event like yours, I'd suggest going down to a local decent-size butcher and explaining what you want. Loads of them do BBQ packs now, a lot of which are good value.

For 35 I'd be keeping it very simple in terms of what you're cooking, for example loads of spatchcock chickens that you can pre-cook and have in the oven then finish on the BBQ that you can then joint up for people to help themselves. Easy to prep, easy to cook and easy to slap on the grill for a bit of char when required - no-one will argue and its virtually impossible to screw up. A few choice sauces with different heats/flavours that you can baste if required or let people do it themselves - loads of BBQ corn on the cob with a few bowls of good salad/coleslaw or rice and some nice bread or flatbreads that you can throw on the grill as well and hey presto.

Sound familiar to any popular chain? hehe

I'm jesting, but ultimately the format will work and done right won't break the bank. I suppose for 35 you'd want 10 reasonable sized chickens, jointed right should give plenty of portions with all the other bits.

I would (as others have said) absolutely avoid burgers/sausages, you'll be there all day and get bored of cooking them.

Prep for that number is key.

ETA - I didn't actually answer the question, but a local butcher should do a you a reasonable deal on 10 chickens - he's going to be ordering them anyway so as long as you give him advance notice, you'll probably get a good deal.

I'm doing 25 in a few weeks. Planning to do a lamb donner, chicken tikka and pork shoulder al pastor. 2 will be done on the rotisserie the day before and then reheated. Plus loads of wraps and salad etc.

Yes, it's cheating but having done bbqs before I'm always knackered and don't get to spend much time with guests, especially as it's my birthday.

Do 30+ for my birthday.

Oven.. from about 5am!

Big rib of beef in the oven (5/6kg) bone in! & rare to medium!
Two legs of pork (3kg each)

Roast potatoes and Wedges (rosemary/garlic) cooked with the pork juices.

Bbq (kettle) while the guests are here (12pm onward).

Then do a leg’s of lamb cut into ‘burgers’ olive oil & rosemary.
Homemade burgers and Butchers sausages (hog & pig).
Chicken and Frankfurter kebabs

Lots of salads/dips, breads, some rice to go with it all.

Hold back a few sirloin steaks for the very fussy!!

Have also done a few fillets of beef on the past on the BBQ… but the rib is a winner.

Always use local butcher on a Friday (pay day for the staff) and pay cash…. smile

I put mine in the smoker and crisped on the bbq. But most folks won’t have a dozen bbqs / outdoor cooking things of varying types. So the oven approach is for the op.

Absolutely. I only have a large gas grill, and the oven is a godsend for large BBQ parties.

Lots of great ideas here, thanks. I have ordered a load of sausages, burgers and chicken kebabs now from a local meat supplier. Will get some kind of pulled pork on the go the day before too I think.
I was also considering getting the pizza oven out for anyone that is still standing when it gets dark, but I honestly think I'll be sick to the back teeth of cooking by then! (and hopefully quite merry)
