Wasn't the practical effect of the cheat software that many of the affected cars were taxed lower than they would otherwise have been?
As I understand it the "cheat" impacted N0x value and not the C02 value, which is what VED is based on.

I have owned one of the affected VWs since new and I refused to have the "fix" done as for me it wasn't worth the risk as I heard too many horror stories of the impact of the "fix".

Same here I refused to have the fix done and still own the car. Touch wood it has been trouble free over 93k/9 years

I got £1700 at the start of August

I got the call to take my car into a VW `dealer' for the `fix' They had it for a day, from before 8am to 5pm, and they couldn't do the fix. They could not get the glow plugs out, which forms part of the fix, and so rather than risking damaging the head when trying to extract the plugs, they just hung onto the car for the day, and then called me to pick the car up, as late as possible. I was NOT impressed to say the least.
That is a problem for VWs, they are generally good cars, but they have really really sh*t dealerships.
