Once is unfortunate. To have it happen twice sounds like carelessness.

Fixed that for you.
Unlike Armagh, London is a cultural melting pot .. in some parts way over 50% of the population are non white .. the visible population even higher

Also about 20% of Met officers are non white and the number of those in front line roles is far higher .. some response teams are over 50% non white

Being non white in London isn’t a rarity … having non white police officers isn’t a rarity

For a non white person to be stopped by the Police isn’t a rarity

Fixed that for ya

I am wondering why he wasn't searched. Surely his actions warranted a closer look. He said he proved to the police he was not on his phone and they let him go.

Really? how on earth did he prove that?
Showed them the phone?
A cursory look at his phone by the roadside would prove nothing. He created time for him to be able to shut anything he was viewing down. Only a call log or text would show either of those activities at the time he was spotted.

He was probably texting LBC so he could do an OJ with a live stream. Muppet.

He appears to have been stopped twice in over two years. When I was younger and I used to drive home from work in the early hours in my saxo VTR I used to get stopped on a far more regular basis than that and I am white, the reason I was driving during the early hours was that I was a serving police officer. Never bothered me.

I don’t think him getting stopped twice in such a long time period is unreasonable
He is very unlucky that on two separate occasions, he has been requested to stop by the Police & then driven off, subsequently appearing all over the media claiming racism as the cause.

I would suggest that had he stopped when originally requested on both occasions & had less of a chip, he would have been on his way in minutes.

Don't let the truth get in the way of some faux outrage.

I've been driving for 30 odd years & have, on a few occasions, been signaled to stop by the police.

It's never, ever occurred to me to ignore that instruction & drive on.
A police car followed me down the country lanes near home a few years back, they only put their lights on once I was out of the unlit tracks and back in a well-lit area. They did tell me that they were planning to stop me earlier but it was procedure to wait until I was an area where I would have felt safe to pull over.

Seems sensible, however in this situation the driver was clearly in an area with plenty of relatively safe spots to pull over.

Many many times I’ve done that .. waited for a car I wanted to stop to reach a well lit area with somewhere safe to request it to stop

it’s far safer for not only the person being stopped but also for the Police officer both in terms of physical location and also personal safety in that you can see the occupants and what they are doing as you approach

Regular to shout up and say you were going to stop a vehicle/how many occupants and the location .. and either ask for another unit to start towards you or what generally happened is that the others on the shift would start coming towards you at normal road speed just in case you shouted for assistance

It works both ways

Thanks for the heads up.
I knew nothing of rotten to the core police forces growing up in the troubles in N.I
A force so bad it was replaced.

There are stops and stops.
The met. has admitted to being "institutionally racist".

Indeed. This fella seems to struggle with the concept of stopping when asked and even drives around Police cars to avoid it.

I wonder how this would have ended in NI.

During the Troubles, no doubt at all. The PSNI are still armed these days, but have far less need than previously.

is it not the case that as of fairly recently any phone use (except for making a call to the emergency services) is illegal? It used to be "interactive communications", which led to someone getting off with using a mobile when he successfully argued he was taking photos (of an accident on the opposite carriageway if memory serves, nice), but now the law has been tightened up so that doing anything with your phone when its not in a cradle is an offence.

I find it extremely incredulous that someone admitting to having his phone between his legs while driving wasn't using it.. while driving. It is feasible perhaps that he just had something intensive running on it and was keeping his nether regions warm, but Occam's Razor and all that.

I would consider a wide, empty, well-lit, 3 lane A road, at 4am, surrounded by Police cars with flashing lights to be THE safest spot to stop in UK.... Unless I had something to hide.

Oh dear the Guardian et al won't like this.

Police watchdog won't investigate Met Police after sprinter Ricardo Dos Santos pulled over in London for second time.
