It’s not the same though.
The migrants arriving in Ireland have arrived from a non-EU country (Northern Ireland)
Much the same as those arriving in Italy from Libya etc.
The EU are trying to shut down migration from non-EU countries, which includes us.
They will face same issue "prove they came from the UK" they can't legally dump people in a different country so like us will be stuck with themThe migrants arriving in Ireland have arrived from a non-EU country (Northern Ireland)

There are rumours going around from impeccable sources * that an election date could be announced tomorrow Monday 29th April.
I urge anyone reading this to vote for a soft Labour type government. One that interferes/ assists its public. The type that has a socialist type background.
Whether you choose Labour or the current Conservatives is of course a matter of personal; choice.

I'd like to vote for the Labour govt of 1945 please, I'll be waiting for my call-up papers and defence spending to increase to 6.5% .I urge anyone reading this to vote for a soft Labour type government. One that interferes/ assists its public. The type that has a socialist type background.

It’s all very strange…
Call an election tomorrow, what signal does that send to voters on Thursday?
Have a mare on Thursday, call an election right after, does that confirm that they are doomed in the GE?
If he does either is there time for the party to go into the election with a new leader?
Having gone on to now, it would seem to make sense to me to carry on until year end, when the economy will be rocking, weekly flights to Rwanda, Labour tripping over themselves in the queue. Of course, he could grow a backbone and tell anyone trying to oust him that they’ll face an immediate election, and take their chances.

If he announces the date tomorrow then it starts to reframe the question in voters minds from "do I like Sunak/Conservatives" (which is a clear no) to "do I want Labour to run the country instead" (which the answer is less clear but still not yes).Call an election tomorrow, what signal does that send to voters on Thursday?

Announcing the date just after the election will be a mistake IMO and it will make him look reactive and weak or opportunistic if they do better than expected.
It also means that any plotters are a bit stumped because everyone will start talking about the general election and not them.
Why in the name of hell would you announce the GE after the May elections? Whether they went well or badly for you? That would be one of the dumbest tactical political decisions you could possibly make. You would have to be the thickest fkwit in the room to consider that path. I know that No10 has an appalling track record of political management recently, but when it comes to GEs they are generally reasonably competent as Lynton tells them what to do.

What difference does it make? They're toast regardless of when the election is called, the tories would do better to just save Lynton's consultancy fee and take the pain.DeejRC said:

Nailed on then if his political nouse is any guide.Lots of hot takes on how a PM 20 points behind in the polls is about to call a GE. He really isn't.

Yep, I said it before but Sunak and the Tories are going to try to stay in power as long as possible because they know they've lost. Plenty of earth to scorch before December.Lots of hot takes on how a PM 20 points behind in the polls is about to call a GE. He really isn't.
The only way an election could be called early is if Rishi wanted to give a two fingered salute on his way out the door but given how gutless and sycophantic he's been this far it's very unlikely.

Quite. If he had any sort of a spine at all he would have told the headbangers to FRO with their Rwanda nonsense and concentrated on stuff that matters to real people, rather than trying to appease clueless Daily Mail reading culture warriors. abzmike said:

Great to hear that Labour will inherit an economy that will be “rocking”. Hadn’t expected that tbh. Call an election tomorrow, what signal does that send to voters on Thursday?

Well not rocking, but growth next year is forecast to be better and there is a strong expectation of a few cuts in interest rates this year. https://www.ey.com/en_uk/news/2024/04/uk-economy-g...
The problem is that waiting for things to improve to make a noticeable difference means a winter election.

Oh.. and he made an extra £109 million during the pandemic.
Nice work Rishi. Glad you have our backs.
