I rather agree with pavarotti's first paragraph above. The RCN's leader, Pat Cullen, seems to think that her union should be allowed to act unlawfully, and that it's outrageous of the government to insist that they can't. She's on the radio right now, complaining bitterly that "the claps have turned to slaps". rolleyes

Just another union leader with grandiose ideas of importance.

Quite. The judge gave them a bking for not accepting the government's position as it was obviously entirely correct. Just makes the RCN look incompetent. The statement they've subsequently made makes them look dishonest.

God, I struggle to read that. I thought the Mail was bad, but that surpasses it!

The absolute glaring auto-correct that got promulgated to atleast 15000 people.

It's not a good look when you're trying to project competence.

In a record turnout for health members in UNISON, over 150,000 members voted in a consultation on the new NHS pay offer, with 74% of these voting to accept.

Playing to the gallery, Cullen did not even bother trying to defend the total lack of a case. Goes down well with the extremists but has really pissed off many nurses we know. The thought that their union would ask them to break the law is an anathema to them.

The RCN have really made an arse of this and actually weakened their position in terms of negotiation and support. For them to insist on going ahead with it despite NHS Employers demonstrating clearly it is unlawful and allowing DH to take them to court is pretty amateur behaviour. Yet still that Cullen women is jumping up and down on her soapbox. This is all going in the direction of nursing roles being removed from AfC but that could prove worse than accepting the offer. Sometimes keeping fighting on is not always the best action.

I wholeheartedly support their challenge for better pay but that should not be laser focused as the RCN have it and realise the bigger picture. In all likelihood there will not be a Tory SoS after the next election so lets not ps off the civil servants at DH too much and scupper any further pay award discussion in the future
Your last paragraph is a really important point - in 18 months the Unions should be having an easy ride getting money out of a Labour government that will have a truly thumping majority. So why go crazy now?

While I don't disagree look at what you are saying, wait 18 months sure but today how do you pay your bills, does the bank wait 18 months before passing on a rate rise, does tesco, does Vodafone etc. Being employed under such terms is like enslavement (your not a slave to be clear), today have a fear wage tomorrow ni you must now wait 18 months. Companies, HMRC, Banks etc don't wait 18 months nore should workers

They think that people will vote Labour so there will be no more strikes. Sort of forgetting that the last time they did this ushered in Maggies reign...

Because inflation is high and scheduled to drop. If inflation was still at pre-covid / pre-Ukrainian levels, asking for 10% would be considered lunacy. In 18 months time when (if!!) inflation is back under control it would be too late.

Probably just a moderate majority by that time. I doubt that even a power crazy Labour government will just give in to a load of ranting Unions - after all, where will they find the money to pay more?. They will be reluctant to increase taxes by the amount required.

People will vote Labour because they aren't the Conservatives. Looking specifically at the old major industry areas which went blue last time. They had their pants pulled down and will likely revert back to Labour now good old Jezza is long gone

Possibly. Starmer could do with a charisma injection but will probably achieve a majority - not as much as some seem to think.

I hope so! Poor kids.

I spoke to a friend who’s a teacher the other day. How can you afford all these days on strike without pay? Tbh I see it as £50 for an extra days leave I’m happy to pay it.
