Its a really interesting area of aviation and a lot more complicated than I can understand!!
Completely off topic, but this article popped up the other day about the cockpit glass on an SR-71:

Sorry for the Facebook link but its fused quartz that is uses an ultrasonic method to bond to the frame. Fascinating stuff. And this was 50 years ago! And this is to just see out. Amazing stuff and absolutely waaaay to complicated for me to understand.

65 years ago.....

Design work began on it in 1958, and the first A-12 flew in 1962.

Suppose Putin actually managed to take Ukraine, then guess Moldova and whatever ex Soviet states would be next, what then ?

All highly hypothetical, would he then want to take other countries, take on NATO etc etc ?

Or would he be happy with his newly reconstituted Soviet empire ?

Also, not sure we have had a Nuclear Armageddon threat for a couple of weeks, have I missed any recently ?

Vlad Vexler reckons if it had gone well a small NATO country would have been next. (After Moldova etc)

Perhaps this will encourage other Russian pilots to crash their planes into things.
I often think Putin is like my 6yo son. He loves nuclear explosions, he often asks about Nukes causing tidal waves. He loves crashing stuff into stuff. He loves 'fighting'. Destroying cities? He'd be all over that.

...and he doesn't sweat the detail.
Thats a description of Godzilla biggrin

Just a little one, love it.

I thought the whole point of NATO was that you fk with any of them, you get the rest coming to sort you out ?

Just saw a video on Reddit, so depressing, Russian soldier in a fox hole gets hit by a grenade, doesnt kill him but think he must have been pretty badly injured, there and then he puts his rifle in his mouth and ends it. Jesus this is grim.

Do you ever wonder if its just part of being human that we have to have wars as a way to keep the numbers down or something ?

Under the what was formerly the USSR, the Baltic States, all of central Europe and bits of southern Europe are now in NATO. It's only when he heads south east towards the 'Stans' that he reaches territory that isn't covered by NATO. Parts of what was formerly known as Yugoslavia would probably welcome it.

...and then you let tiny Baltic States join and all of a sudden there's some doubt whether you all go to war over them.

Luckily Putin solved that one for us. NATO is 100pc United and dedicated for two generations now.

I can't attest to the credibility of the source but it seems as though Turkey is now saying yes to Finland joining NATO

I wonder if there are practical difficulties for a head of state who can never travel to significant chunks of the world.

He's not going to be in the dock that's for sure but signalling to the rest of the world how evil he is does have merit. There are plenty of countries sitting on the fence, at best. This should help them decide that they are either with evil or against.

While it seems people point to the 3 Baltic countries as most likely, to have happened to, that would have been a direct attack on NATO, and I don't think he's that stupid.
However, getting all of Ukraine had the 3 day Special Operation been successful, would have opened up a further, and possibly more likely scenario.
Hungary and Serbia are at the moment more Kremlin leaning than EU/NATO despite being in NATO, and Hungary have a land border with Ukraine in the north and Serbia in the south.....
So I think the danger would have been its success making it much easier for Hungary and maybe Serbia to switch sides again and leave NATO and rejoin Russian Fed, without Russia actually attacking these NATO countries. It would only need Montenegro to do the same, and Russia would then have access to the Adriatic again....and cutting NATO in two.

I think the point of attacking a NATO country would have been to collapse NATO, not to get the territory. Attack a tiny country nobody in the USA had ever heard of. Maybe America stays out. NATO is over.

That's the logic. Nobody will ever know if that was the idea.

That problem is gone for good, though.
