It's questionable just how much of the "cheap st from China" the developed world actually needs. It turns out, of late, even demand for the not so cheap stuff, like iPhones, is fairly elastic. Throw in a few hefty, punitive trade tariffs and augment that with the goodwill and moral support of consumers who don't want to buy from a China that arms Russia and what would you have left?

Production, large scale, can't switch locations fast, but consumers can switch allegiance and demand almost instantly. I wonder if Xi appreciates this problem?
I don't think they probably care too much about the cheap tat, and as you say, consumers, if they choose can and might look elsewhere.
Its the bigger production stuff that is the money earner. There was a documentary on TV the other day about the new London Gateway docks build, and the huge dockside cranes for it came from China, and its stuff like that which won't be so easily sourced elsewhere, or as cheaply.
If Xi thinks he can have Pootin in his pocket would he feel that the future Russian market for Chinese stuff could replace the western demand should that disappear as a result of Chinese support to Russia against Ukraine?
I suspect not, and I suspect, China will agree via backdoor methods with as much plausible deniability, or they decline Pootin's request...and do what China does best, and sit on the fence and pick up the pieces down the road, when Pootin is even more desperate.
I agree with you on your last point.

I tend to disagree somewhat on the former. China does not see or use its currency as an economic tool. It is used as an internal, political tool. Witness the 'employment' created by the 'investment' in ghost cities, encouraged and bankrolled by both local and national government. they need the jobs, all of them, even if demographically they will begin to struggle to sustain what they have.

If you look at the 12-point plan published on the chinese govt's website, it sounds relatively balanced. There's a couple of digs at the west, but overall they empahsise de-escalation, negotiation, no nukes, and re-establishing trade.

China is out for China, they don't much care for Russia beyond trade.
It falls down at the de-escalation and negotiation..

Putin will use any ceasefire as a regroup/rearm/establishing supply line, Putin wont accept any ceding of territory, Ukraine won't accept any Russian presence/land grab.

Precisely. The flaw is that Xi assumes Putin will not lie through his arse and every other orifice to him, just like he does to everyone else. Vranyo!

Is Dmitry Yakushchenko dead or not?

They video-ed him getting killed and also released a vid that suggests he was alive after the publicity over his death.

What gives?

I assumed that the video of him alive was taken before his execution but released after the execution video.

Suspect that the video of him alive was because of a backlash against wagner in russia over the execution?

Well yeah, but for that to be the case they would have needed to predict the backlash which P refers to.

Hmm. James Vasquez: "I know Wagner group would love to kill me. Imagine if I sent out a video of me interviewing the Wagner prisoner we traded 25 Ukraine POW’s for before they publicly executed him with a sledgehammer. Yup, I have it. We captured him in September. Been sitting on this one for awhile"

NATO head claiming Putin asking Xi for lethal weapons during their current bum chum visit..
I'd be shocked if he wasn't asking Xi for arms and ammo, UAV's and all sorts of stuff......

What the west is wondering about is what will Xi's answer be.

Or how much does China think they can covertly send over if they try and do it that way. Of course as soon as the first Chinese supplied bit of kit is captured by Ukraine, then that whistle will be blown if China chooses that path to take.
Pootin can ask all he likes.
I am very sure Xi Jin Ping isn't going to oblige any weapons.
Xi Jin Ping risks too much if he is seen as assisting Russia

China don't care much for Russia.
I feel Xi Jin Ping is more likely to tell Putin to wind his neck in.

The Chinese 12 point plan (https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/mfa_eng/zxxx_662805/202302/t20230224_11030713.html) is just a bunch of platitudes and waffle. It can be interpreted by either side as a vindication of their end goals for the war or an affirmation of their current position and so a basis to freeze at the status quo.

....and having complained about the dollar being the work currency Russians are coming to terms with the realization they are trading in yuan from now on.

Deep down they are well aware China are going to be worse for Russia than the decadent West. They know.

I thought the Yen was more widely used in Japan?

Trying to gain territory in the west at the cost of losing far more in the east. Real 4d chess there.
