And these two posts are a good example of why politics in this country is an absolute shambles - people on different sides of a random argument just shouting names at each other.

We're screwed as a country if this is how we continue - neither party or the system that sustains them is fit for purpose
No. Politics is a shambles because of the politicians. It’s really that simple. Clowns like Anderson are an example of why.

I partly agree; there are many politicians, in all parties, who couldn't muster an original thought between them, and simply parrot the party line. The SNP, for example, have plenty of those.

In addition, we have far too many career politicians who have little real world experience. Or come from very privileged backgrounds.

Lee Anderson, however, is an exception. He says what he thinks, even if it's not on message - his views on the death penalty for example. He's also very far from the stereotypical MP and is certainly not a product of some party machine.

Clearly you don't share his politics, but you have to admit that he's not your run of the mill Tory MP. With respect, dismissing him as a 'clown' is a bit simplistic.

And yet him getting a friend to pretend to be a supporter on camera with intent to deceive is entirely consistent of the rot, lack of accountability and dishonesty in the Conservative Party today.

It really isn't - because literally everything he says is just absolute bks and designed purely to fan the flames of pointless culture wars, and no doubt secure a nice little gig on the likes of GB News once his career is an MP is over (which could well be 2024 judging by the local reaction).

This, the Tories know the only hope they have of winning the next GE is to start a smear campaign to rival Trump’s. They have no policies, no legacy (worth using), no talent, so it’s resorted to stoking a culture war we’ve already seen through….

The best bit is the Donors and key supporters have seen through it too

Anderson bless him, is the sacrificial lamb in all this. He spouts the nonsense so the likes of Braverman, Clevrly et al are kept “clean”. He throws the red meat out and takes all the public flack from the opposition. In two years time he’ll defect to Reform or some other party, with a two hour show on GBeebies as his reward…

Sorry, but it really is, simplistic that is. To assert that "literally everything" that someone says is "absolute b's" is about as simplistic as it gets.
For example, many share his view about the death penalty in certain circumstances. I don't agree with Anderson on that issue, but it's a perfectly valid position to hold, and an honest answer by him to a question that he was asked.

I also think his opinion about the inability of some folk to budget and cook on a low income opens up a worthwhile debate: might it be possible to make some people's lives better with a bit of practical education?

I've seen Lee Anderson as a contributor many times on Talk TV - typically on Mike Graham's show. I think he comes across as forthright, but fair and with lots of common sense. Of course, I disagree with him on some issues. Nuance. Balance. You should try it.

Agreed; that was a silly thing of Anderson to do and he should just admit his error of judgement. Then again, Lisa Nandy on Question Time last week pretending that she'd had "many robust debates [including] in private with Lee Anderson", when he's never even met her, is just as bad.

Let's be honest, silly things said by politicians is not just confined to the Tories (yes I know you didn't say it was). Nor to Labour. I mean, Nicola Sturgeon? rolleyes

Blimey, this thread shows up the white collar, Home Counties Guardian Readers on PH. Amazed at how many folks resort to ad hominem attacks on the guy for simply expressing views and opinions that differ to their own.
Lee worked for Citizens Advice for 10 years and as is well known, as a miner. For years he was a Labour supporter and councillor. I doubt many of the Fairy soft handed folks on here have comparable resumes. The comments and views on this thread remind me of Lady Nugee's White Van Man tweet; snobbery at it's worst. Conversely, the Jared O' Mara thread only made it to two pages and was full of desperate whataboutery in relation to the Conservatives rather than condemnation of the despicable convicted criminal.

We have reached the point where it’s unclear what is satire and what is not. I know anon is, but I don’t know if S600 was insulting or playing along…

Ah.
Hilarious isn't it. They seem to think the working classes identify with him, but one look at his voting record; against raising income tax thresholds, against taxing banks, for increasing VAT and for restricting trade unions would suggest otherwise. There's also the company he keeps. We really don't want people like this anywhere near government, let alone deputy chair, I think its a sop to the Reform element.

Regarding the bit in (my) bold: Reform policy is to increase the threshold for income tax to £20,000 and to decrease VAT to 18%. Therefore, the idea that Lee Anderson is a "sop to the Reform element", given his voting record, doesn't really stack up, does it?

I do find all these comments like "we don't want people like this anywhere near government" quite amusing. If Lee Anderson is the 'clown' that some assert, you'd think opponents of the Tories would welcome Anderson's appointment. scratchchin

I posted a selective part of his voting record to highlight that he's not really a working class hero. For reasons unexplained, you expect his voting record to align directly with the Reform manifesto while he's a sitting Tory MP and somehow you think you're making a point. In my opinion his promotion is purely to appease the more right wing elements of the party and an indication that they are worried about Reform UK, that's all. I haven't asserted that's he's a clown at all, but regardless, you've reached the conclusion that because opposition parties have not welcomed his appointment he is therefore not a clown. I think you should reflect.

He’s there as a distraction and to stoke the occasional culture war and nothing else..

Just you watch, whenever the Tories screw up yet again or there’s an unsavoury headline about to drop, 30p Lee will say or do something obnoxious that’ll get the headlines and drag the conversation away from where it needs to be.

Hmm. More like where the Labour Party would like it to be.
